springs Maybe add a leaf or a used set of springs, someone here had mentioned the use of a particular econline van set??? Can't remember. You could always just get the adjutable rear spring shackels.....kinda old school cheap, but effective. Don't do the air shock thing unless you're really good at overhead welding... they will split the shock mount plates all the way through.
You can also use shackles. I ripped the floor pan on a Sprint just from wheel hop... no air shocks. The mounts are not strong and will tear out a chunk of floor pan when they go. I guess one could say the mounts are strong enough, but the floor pan is weak.
I had air shocks since I got the car (not now tho). I also never filled them. I would be checking them all the time too, that's annoying. I would fill them till they didn't lift any more then let out just a bit to see the ass just begin to drop. Never really liked the ride.
I know i had some 1.48 60" times on mine but these guys got me paranoid so i did the drag shock thing.
What I am thinking of what I am going to do is over engineer this airshock problem: I am going to weld the shock mounts to a 2"X3"x1/4" angle iron that will stretch from one frame rail to the opposite frame rail, then I am going to insert a shaved heavy-weight leaf spring on my set of leafsprings, then if needed i will raise the gussets and shackles. ;-)
oh BTW blugene, This week has been perfect to go to Barton Springs, weather during the day has been mid to high 80s, The Barton Spring water never changes temperature though, always super cold. This week was a SXSW festival, many sweet rides
There should be some posts on here for gabriel hijacker, dont use them on your mav. This is somtiming we did in the in the 60' and 70' with are galaxy's and ltd's, to put mickey thompson's under the car.
Mine are Monroe part #MA709, looks like gabriel hijacker. I was strolling on CL this morning before going to work and bumped into a 5.0 for $300 http://austin.craigslist.org/cto/1082573364.html . just thought someone might be interested. maybe trans comes with it as well.
This is what I was referring to in my previous post. I've seen this done and it looks and works good!
I am glad I saw this post. I would have never known air shocks were a bad thing on a Maverick. I just bought some for may car. I guess I need to buy some good leaf springs now and sell the air shocks or just run real low pressure in them. That should be okay, right? I would think as long as I am not trying to lift the car with the shocks they would be okay to run with 25-30psi. I just got some wide NOS Firestone bias ply L60-14 tires for the rear. I know bias ply tires aren't near what modern tires are. They are just for looks anyway. My little six banger doesn't need big tires at all. I just want my car to look like a time capsule from 1970.
why rework the rear to to use air shocks when you can just get the correct springs and shocks, for a lot less effort and money?
