I put the roller 302 and big bell housing C4 in the maverick. I got the tranny out of a 73 F-100. I am using the C4 tranny and converter. I am using the flexplate from the roller motor. When I put it together I had to force it. When we tried to spin it over it would not budge. We know the starter is good. I am thinking that I don't have the converter in all the way. Anyone else have any ideas

I thought the aod and big bell housing C4 both used the same 164 tooth flexplate

What do you mean when you say you had to force it? I would double check the converter to make sure it is installed correctly. Does the flexplate have the correct bolt pattern for the converter.

The AOD has a 3/4" offset, and the C-4 is 1/2", with the AOD flexplate, the converter will go in too far.

    They do.

    That is correct.

I don't know about that, never heard that one. I'm running a 85 AOD flexplate with a 77 Granada C4, and it went together fine. The tranny works fine, no noises. If the converter was in 1/4" too far, seems like it would bind. As with all FORD parts, maybe some do, some don't? You all know how they changed things from time to time for no apparent reason....

Pull the trans back out.The converter isnt seated properly in the pump.Thats why you had to force it together.I wouldnt be surprised if you broke the dogs off the pump gear either.I hope I am wrong but...Been there done that...once...with mopar.Or your ring gear is too bog for the bell and binding against it causing it to be locked up.Good luck.
PS: You do have a plate between the blck and trans right???

had a similar problem with 2 drain plugs in converter but only one went through a hole and the other kind of wedged the flexplate. that was in a 67 mustang with a c4 back in 1981. i was 16.....you probably only have one drain plug, but it does not hurt to look.

When you put the tranny in you must make sure that the motor turns over by hand. If it siezes and gets tightened too much you can damage the tranny or the convertor, or crack the bellhousing.

I decided to use the original tranny that came with the 250. I have done ordered the 157 tooth 50 oz flexplate. I took the c4 of the 250 today and found out it had a new converter in it.
