i have a 70 Mav. It has a 9 inch rear. I need shocks (rear) for it. Went to parts store(autozone)(yippee) they could not fine it. Heres the description: it has the eye hole on the top, nut and thread type at the bottom. The shock is bigger at the top than at the bottom. I found one that had the right fittings, but was up side down! What year/model shock do I need? I was there for about a hour trying to find the right one, with no luck! I looked through the JEGS catalog, tonight, with no luck of finding one that looks like mine. Any and all help appreciated....thanks!

Someone did you a favor if your Mav has a 9" rear. They didn't come with one, but for performance sake, the 9" is what you want (do you 'really' have a 9"??).

I recently came across a similar situation. I found the rear in mine came out of a '72 Ford Econoline van.

Luckily, one of the previous owners who made the swap used the swaped (drum) brakes as well. You can cross-reference the brake shoe dimensions (width and diameter) to 'help' narrow your search for the swaped rear. Then, 'maybe' you can determine which shock (or style shock) to use. In my case it was fairly easy. The rear came out of either a '72 Econoline or a '52 Country Squire station wagon!

    You may try that approach.

www.summitracing.com has a pretty good selection of performance shocks that may fit your application.

A previous owner may have altered the shock configuration also. Determine your ride height, note the attachment configuration and call Summit tech line. They can usually accomodate hard-to-fit components.

'Hope the info helps and good luck,

    Rick

    ok here goes

I will never ever ever go to autozone again!!!! I will walk bare foot through fire and ice before I ever walk throught there doors and by a part for one of my Mavs. or any of my other cars. Got up this morning to conitnue the search. Went to NAPA(should have went there last night, but they close at 6pm). Walk in the door, told them what I had and what I wanted. The guy looked it up,70 Ford Mav.,went to the back and TA DA!!!!! There is my new shock. I do not like to BLAST!! places for trying to make a living, but for me personally, I have had enough of autozone!! I went back there this morning, to let them know that they have some kinda problem with their"ALL MIGHTY COMPUTER". I was really nice(at first) the guy told me that there was no problem with their computer. Told me that "I" needed to figure out what "I" had before I came to them for help. Well I got a little pissed, but kept my cool and started reaming him a new ass!!!! I did it professional and politely. I feel I walked out of there(for the LAST TIME) with my head up and with no reason to be ashamed of how I acted. I never used foul language or said anything that might make me look just as foolish as them. Anyway to finish up here, the shock for a 70 maverick is what I needed! autozones puter had the wrong part#. So everything is fine. If I have made anyone mad about the autozone issues, I am sorry. Maybe its just the ones here in Ky. P.S. Yes it is a 9 inch.

    LOL !

No, you're not the only one here to bash AutoCrap. Actually, it's been a while since somone flamed 'em. So, congratulations on being the first on the NEW board bash em!

Usually, and I DO limit it to 'more often than not', their on-line computer system DOES allow you to see if some parts are interchangable - not that you'd buy from them, but just to compare P/N's. In your case, their data base was obviously wrong.

Glad you got what you needed,

    R

I'm not into bashing either, but if you can find a napa guy that knows you by name when you walk in the door, they will go to hell and back to find your part. they must get paid commision

I knew someone from Pep Boys, and they gave me the heads up about Auto Zone. The reason that they are so cheap, is that they tend to use the most generic products. Generic rebuild on parts, etc...Stay away!!

.....My 2 cents on Auto Zone. All the stores seem to be on real time computer (SATELLITE) system. Every store will have the same listing problem when there happens to be one.
.... The employees are not much motivated nor are there any ways to correct the parts program when discovered.
....The company contracts with the lowest cost providers so quality will suffer.
....Advance Auto is really no better. I went for shocks, orderd AC Delco. When I opened the box in the store, they were stud mount both ends, WRONG! Money back time!
....Alternators is a part that seem not have a very long life from these stores.
....Try this one on for size. Rear calipers- rebuilt-emergency brake lever froze, looked into, found all corroded internally while out side looked like new. Store argued about it till they took apart one off there shelf and found the same. Go figure.
.....As for the employees, you will run into every reaction mixed with all the different kinds of people. They are hardened, embarrased, and all kinds of variations in between.
.....The best way to help improve the service/products is to send a message to the company, otherwise they will keep right on with the status quo.
.....This is why their prices are lower.
    .....Its hit or miss.
