What should I be looking for with a torn harmonic balancer? I am positive there is a 50 oz flexplate on this engine but there seems to be a vibration upon starting. Its feels like a balance issue. What makes me beleive its a balancer is it was'nt there after the install. of course just after the install there was'nt any high revs. on sunday we let off a couple of 2500 rpm revs. I noticed the vib soon after that. What do you guys think? Mitch
Mine had a crappy balancer once. The guts basically started coming out from the rear of the balancer due to slipping. Is that your original balancer? Could it be the wrong size for the flex plate?
Granted I'm feeling a little under the weather today, but I don't see where it says he has a 6 cylinder. What engine are we talking about here?
Heres what we have 302 30 over, 50 oz crank, 50 oz flex ,50 oz balancer, air gap manifold,600 cfm edelbrock, headers. Using c-4 tranny from 75 250 six. I started it tonite and it didnt seem as bad. I think the thing to do is put a timming light on it and see where the marks are. if its anything but 6 btdc then I would assume the balancer has slipped. I think the small spins we have givin her (2500-3000) would not be enough to slip the balancer but maybe im wrong.I'll know tomorrow, and if thats not it I think maybe drain the oil take off the filter and cut it up see whats in it.If I find metal see if it will stick to a magnet and that should tell a story. If not that then the only other thing I coud think of would be the convertor. What do you guys think?
Balance weight could have fallen off flywheel or converter. Seen it happen. Aftermarket replacement parts are the worst for bad welds. did you check the plugs and wires? maybe a wire is laying on a header pipe. That'll make 'er shake.
wires are up off of headers, the wires I put on may not be the best. I think i'll look at the balancer to make sure she's still in time if not i'll know its the balancer. next will be new wires. Might be making moutain out of molehill, famous for that according to my wife! Need to check the obvious things first, well off to the garage. Let you know later, thanks for the help. Mitch
