Got me a V8 :)

    i just picked up a 289 for $150 everything is there i just have to rebuild it (it's a 2bbl too), will my 250I6 tranny handle a stock 289

    Congrats! I think your trans will do fine if it's currently going strong behind the 250. You might need a different flexplate though. Does your 289 already have one? 157 tooth?

    no but i can get one, the tranny in my car is working fine by the way.

    is the 289 a 5 or 6 bolt bell housing?

    not sure but i will check an get back to you on that. is the 250 c4 5 or 6?

    Three 71 Maverick Grabbers, a 72 302 Sprint, a 73 LDO 2door parts car, a 76 silver v8 Stallion.
    The 250 will be a 6 bolt. Most likely the 289 will be too but there are some 5 bolt ones floating around out there.

    ok thanx i will be sure to check when i pick up the motor on thursday. how come i can use the 250i6 tranny with a 289 but if i had a 302 i would have to change the tranny:hmmm:

    You wouldn't have to. It's the 170/200 tranny bellhousing that won't fit.

    i have a v8 tranny but its been sitting out in the weather for a while dont know if its any good, i just read that the i6 tranny wont last long behind the v8

    I guess it varies on how strong the 289 is and how you drive it. I have the stock 6cylinder tranny in mine behind a mild 302. I plan on driving it easy for the time being

    For the record, I'm still a rookie when it comes doing things automatically, so correct me if I'm wrong. I heard the 250/302 used the same transmissions only the torque converter was different. Also heard the 170/200 had one less clutch than the 250/302 trans. But like they say...listen long enough and you hear anything.

    That's what I thought too. But of course I could be wrong...
