Heres the deal. Changing out the balancer because of a vib. problem, upon pulling the crank pulley off I noticed a round weight? bout the size of a nickel on the pulley. Does this Weight have to be in any certain position. It bolts to the crank so as close as I can figure this weight may 0 balance the pulley? Am I on track with this one?

It zero balances the pulley. If the balancer ring has slipped, that'll be the source of the vibration, unless you have the wrong imbalance to start with (28 vs 50)

Thanks thats what I thought. I do have a 50 oz crank with a 50oz flex and a 50 oz balancer but I dont know anything about the balancer. It was used and could have been slipped prior to install. Got pulleys and belts off now going to start her and see what I got. If still there Ill pull the balancer and replace, See what happens. Thanks for the confirmation.

In all my 30 years of fooling with SBF's, the only balancer I've seen that slipped the outer ring was a 94 50 oz unit. My 331 has a 39 year old balancer on it, go figure.

And yes I think I can pick them up and tell the differance. I think? I want to be sure  Can someone tell me?

That balancer or dampener was used 1970-71, on Ford 302's.

I think both are 1979 28 oz balancers. I'm not sure of the a-1,a-2 I might be wrong but i beleive there both from truck engines, anyway neither will work for me I need a 50 oz balancer. So to the bone yard we go,Took home a balancer off a 84 f-150, I beleive it to be a 50 oz. I think ford stop making the 28 oz engine in 1979 or 80. Hoefully one of the guru's will chip in and correct me and we will all know.We installed the new(old) balancer and walla no vib. but I do think the drive shaft maybe rotated 180 degrees off. thats on tap for tommorrow, unless we decide to walleye fish. Of course we could do both and make it a great day!!
Thanks all for your help. Mitch & Tanner

They're both 69 M/Y 28 oz/in balancers, use either one. I used the heaviest of what I had on hand for my 331. I don't recall the casting numbers on it though. It looks similar to a 289 Hi-po unit.
