I was talking to a friend about my plans to put a 65-68 Mustang gas tank in my Mav to replace the old one and center it up. He said that he had done that on a Mav years ago but instead fo bolting it underneath the car, he cut away some rusted metal in the trunk and dropped it in that way. Has anyone else ever heard of this and what would be the drawbacks of doing one this way?? I do have some rust that I was going to cut out and fix while the tank was out but if you drop it in, this sounds like a pretty large cut out and make new panels job to me. Mines not going to be any where close to stock anyway and if its done right, it might not look too bad. What do you guys think???

I bought a 69 Mustang for my 73 Grabber. My plan was to do just that. I haven`t done it yet,but I like the idea of the tank not being so low as when mounted underneath.I would also like to hear some comment pro or con.

Why bother when you can buy a bolt in replacement for a 77 from www.rockauto.com for just over $100

Biggest draw back is the sheet metal work and the reason they were put under the floor in the first place. If your willing to take the chance safety wise, and have access to a metal brake, it would not be that hard to do. Eventually when I finish my convertible project, I plan on doing just that.

Thank you for your reply. I have the metal work under control. Safety wise I feel it`s no different than driving a classic Mustang.

Another advantage is to get a flat trunk floor. Ours suck the way they are.

Yeah but it won't be centered and will still cause fitment problems with the rear valence since I'm converting to small bumpers.

Mavaholic,I agree that the flat trunk does look better since I looked at a 66 Falcon at a cruise in today. How much sheet metal work do you think it will take to do this??
