Well after trying many many things we have decided to pull our engine down and do a complete rebuild. so tomorrow AM I will drop off our block, crank, pistons, heads for complete redo. This engine was received from a (friend) who claimed it ran very well. I guess good to him and good to me are two diff. things. so after checking the compression and only finding 65 per cyilinder she is now out off the car and in peices. Up side is ,it makes a fast install after shop is done. We are going to try and maintain the 30 over (hoping not to buy pistons) and match a cam to our air gap / 600 edelbrock/headers. From there its pretty much plug and play. Should have done this from the start! tryed to reduse costs and once again I lost.Lessons cost money. More later, Mitch
going to make a trip to the bone yard and look for some gt40's or may just recon. the e-7's we have. have to see how hard they want to jab for the 40's. really need to talk to the machine shop and see what they suggest. we WILL be looking for the best bang for the buck. And right now the buck is small. Might have to get into may savings. you know what happens when the fever hits you. 500 turns into 5000. (ouch)
yes, it was a mae crank as I thought. so everything was correct from the start. we did a leak down and its a wonder it even ran. the exhaust valves where leaking badly. it is possible we had to long of push rods but after loosing up the rockers and filling the cylinder with 125psi it was evident as to what was happening. The lesson is always,I say always do a compression check on a engine that is used and claimed to run well. I just don't want the headach and I'm going to have either horn or sperry build a short block and I'll finish it up. God knows I certainly have the experince beings I've already worn out a set of engine bolts! LOL
Took block and crank to shop today, they mic out the cylinders and they were running .003 over, said they would just deglaze cylinders and clean up 30 over pistons. Chris made the comment that those pistons didnt have many miles on them. they scotch bright one while i was there and it didnt take much effort to make them look new. The crank had been turned once and so we decided to go ahead and turn it .020. So all in all what We are getting is a boil and flux both block and heads, deglaze cylinders, new comp cam,all new clevite bearings and new moly rings ,heads completly redone with new springs to match new cam.new lifters and push rods, new melling oil pump.assembled ready to bolt on air gap manifold and 7 qaurt pan for $1200.00. What do you think? Good price, average, to much? I have never had this much work done so I really dont know. I feel good about it and this shop has a great reputation for building strong engines. I do know alot of draggers use them. They have been around along time, before I was even in high school, and I'm 50 years young! Tell me what you think. Mitch
Mitch, who are you having do it? I think that is a decent price. I know Horn had redone the engine in my dad's 80 z28 and it runs pretty good, nice and strong, but they did it before he bought it so I don't know how much it was or what all has been done to it.
