I just found out that by the time I finish my '77's restoration, I'll have to take her to emissions, if I rebuild the engine without all the emissions junk on it, and go through the internals, do you guys think it will pass an idle test?
In Georgia .. if they look under the car and the catalytic convertor or air pump is missing ... you automatically fail ... they won't even bother hooking it up and test it. However, only 1980 and above need to be tested. You may have a problem. Illinois requires all vehicles 1968 and up to be tested ...
retard the timing and tune down the idle so its hardly running, make sure the cars nice and warm when you bring it in. Also if that doesn't work try methal hydrate, used for starting up desil engines in the cold
I thought I heard cars over 25 years old would be exempt of the emissions testing in IL. Also, from what I know, there is still issues to be solved before the emissions testing even gets off the ground. Here in IL there are more POS cars on the road. Real safety hazards. If emissions testing does get going here, I would bet at least 5% of the vehicles on the road would fail. Dan
i've seen stuff at an AutoZone before that says it 'guarantees' and emission pass, you might want to check that out too.
If this Mav won't be your daily driver, you might consider registering it as an antique. I got sick of dealing with state inspection for both of mine (even though they passed) so I put historic plates on them and washed my hands of the whole mess. Now I'm exempt from inspection and only paid a one-time fee for the plates. Insurance is way cheaper too. There are mileage restrictions but it was worth not having the aggravation of dealing with the DMV. I don't know exactly how it works in IL but I bet it's similar. Just food for thought. Sam
