    Texas Air Check Program

In Texas we have an air check program. If the car has been in your name for 1 year and if fails emissions test and it is licensed the state will give you a voucher for 3k and you buy a hybird you get $3500.

I a plug wire fell off it would fail the test and you get the voucher.

It is for 1999 and older cars. There are some income requirements.

The air check folks say if the Feds pass that bill they will still give the 3k voucher.

we have a similar government program over here in germany. you get 2500€ if you ditch your old old car, must be older than 9 years and has to be registered in your name for at least a year.

it works quite well - ford is making really good money, they even have problems delivering their small cars (KA & Fiesta) on schedule.
but what comes after the government program once it runs out? a big depression because everybody is driving their small economic car and nobody will be buying middle cars like they used to?

no one knows what will come out of this in the long run...

I do, how many other muscle cars do you see around you on a daily basis? how about full sized pickups that are not owned by a company? next question, how many people dont have to spend at least half their day at work just to pay for the vehicle to get to work? it only takes me an hour to pay for my gas and insurance for the day. my wife has to work more than half the day to pay for the cost of a payment on top of that for her car. guess what that means, less money to spend on playthings= weaker economy....

I help out at a non-profit that takes DONATED vehicles, makes necessary repairs to get them safe and servicable, and sells them at a subsidized price to people recovering from bad situations. Typical donation is a 1990s car worth maybe $1000 when donated and maybe $2500 when placed. This bill is targeted at the typical donated car. It may put us out of business.

Haven't heard anything from the American car companies on this. Expect they're afraid to comment. Also expect the bill will help the Japanese more than American car companies. I'm afraid this country will never recover from what happening now.
