    I'm about to get my steering box back into my car and I need a new rag joint. I know I can just go down to any auto parts store and pick up a rubber/nylon rag joint (the "HELP" section of most stores) but I've seen some polyurethane ones on ebay and from Ingalls Engineering Co. granted they are usually for 67-70 mustangs but they should work on a maverick. Has anyone used one of these? are they worth the $30 or so dollars? thanks.

    ive never heard of polyurithane rag joints. my first suspicion is that it will tear unless it has some sort of webing or belting in it. ive seen polyurithane rip and crack before. do you have a link. ill try a search.

    here is a ebay link;

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/67-6...s?hash=item1c0958ecaa&_trksid=p4506.m20.l1116

    The $30 I mentioned was the assumed shipping charge included...

    I'm just trying to figure if it'll be worth it. The shop I had rebuild my steering box was trying to sell me one but they don't sell just the kit they wanted me to bring my rag joint coupler hard parts over to them and they will install the kit for about $100 which was way to pricey for me but they said one would last about 5 years or more without issues. the rubber one I had in my car, I installed it about 6 to 7 years ago and it needed to be replaced anyway...

    So you don't think they would be a good investment? I still would like to hear some experiances though. Thank you.

    I don't see in any performance gain in having a poly rag...only more vibration transmitting to the steering wheel.

    I was thinking it would also reduce play in the steering wheel that would be there from the rubber one. thanks.

    David; it might have the opposite effect. If it is stiffer, and won't absorb the vibrations from the steering and suspension, it could make it more uncomfortable to drive. I know the poly suspension bushings and rear spring bushings make the ride much more harsh than the stock rubber ones. I took my poly stuff out, and used the rubber ones. Good question though, and I guess someone needs to put one in and see.

    That is the way I think about it Earl. I think it would be more harsh and not provide any real benefit at all.

    I had one on my pickup before it broke. I replaced it with a reinforced rubber one at no change in feel.

    I have the poly version on my f100 4x4 since 94 and it's been fine.
