Maybe a redundant question, but valid nonetheless. Curious what you guys have done in terms of "chrome alternatives". While I LIKE original chrome, it's expensive. Is powder coating a viable option? I realize I can also paint them in body color - don't think that would be a great idea in my case.

    Any inputs? Thanks.

What's "them"? Some things, like bumpers, to me, have to be chrome.

I painted all the chrome and anodized trim on my car, including the bumpers. It's been 10 years and I haven't had any problems. Bumpers were sandblasted and primed prior to paint, and the other trim was cleaned using a common paint prep solvent. Saved lots of money and I love the look. Just my opinion. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Nothing is "As Good As" chrome on a 70's car.

I think chrome is the best. Building on a real cheap budget i would go black.

"chrome" powdercoat would be the way to go if your looking to get out cheaper not as clear as real chrome but will be durable and not rust

Im saving to have mine powercoated.

I had definitely considered chrome powdercoat. Like you said, looks good, not as clear, but is still very nice.

I have seen many good looking comets with bad ugly rusted bumpers that I would like to own, but I have never seen a comet with a painted bumper that didnt make me wonder how many other short cuts the last owner took.

You know that's why I've been kinda on the fence about my bumpers. I've had many people tell me my black bumpers look great with the color scheme of my car, and I think so too. Every time I talk about chroming them I hear some variation of "leave them black, they look fine!" but I keep thinking the painted bumpers diminish the car in the eyes of people who know better, that people who are aware these bumpers are supposed to be chrome will look at it and think I've halfassed it and cut corners. I have stared at it, thought about it, Photoshopped it, and I still think my car looks better with black bumpers though.

I think they look good on your car, it's the color, black goes well with it, but it you had a red car, black bumpers would look awful.

Many rusty bumpers get painted, but I have never seen someone take a nicely chromed bumper and want to paint it.
