this is the one thing that has been driving me nuts for a while.
what is the exact difference between a 250 i6 c4 and a 302 c4? some have told me i need to change it and get a 302 c4 and others say that i can keep the 250 i6 c4 in. Ive even been told that there the same...please help me?!:( im so confused

i will be putting in a 302 bore .060 over with an RV cam in it

My understanding is that the v8 C4 has an extra clutch in it making it a little beefier for the v8. The one from the 250 should work if you don't get on it too hard, too often.:)

worse comes to worse, drive it till it dies and either rebuild it to or better then a stock v8 c4 or fine a low mi v8 c4

I plan to use the 250 c4( supposivly been rebuilt a few thousand miles when i bought the car but hes not sure to what specs o_O)

I thought the 302 had a larger bell housing
I can tell you that when I changed over to a 302 from my I6 the only thing I did is get a bigger bellhousing

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 200 C4 may have had fewer clutches than the V8 trans, but the 250 C4 was the same as the 302 C4.

    250 c4 trans

I did the same thing to my mav about 2 years ago. the 250 c4 trans will work and the bell housing will bolt up to the 302. as long as your sure its a 250 and not a 200. If I remember correctly you will need to change the flex plate. the difference is the internal and external ballancing of 250 and 302. :yup:

As far as I know you're right. The torque converter is looser on a 6 cylinder engine.

I have a 250 C4 with the 6 converter behind the 302 in my F100. It is a 266 cam, ported 351 headed engine that I run out hard. Always heard the same thing about the clutches but I figured I would throw it in the truck and deal with it later....which was 6 years ago and about 35,000 miles. Still drives the same. The 6 converter definitely pulls less on the brake when sitting at a stop light...so I tend to agree with the higher stall. However, I don't think it is more than a couple of hundred RPM. Sorry for the lack of real technical input...just sharing my experience. I'm sure someone has a story about burning one up in a month.

the 250 and 302 have the same bellhousing, but the 170's and 200's bellhousings are smaller
