I got my front brakes conerted to disc, had a disc/drum prop valve installed and still didn't have a uge difference in braking power. If you read through the many disc conversions, not a lotta people say that there is a huge improvement after the conversion. But I'm happy because I have no clue how to work on drums but discs I'm comfortable with.
I don't know much about the difference between drum+drum and disc+drum braking power and general feel, as I've never driven a drum+drum Maverick. But I will say there's quite a difference when you go from disc+drum to disc+disc.
Still running the drum/drum master cylinder and prop valve on my '72 with front discs. The car stops excellent, far less pedal effort required, and it stops straight and true every time. Night and day difference in my case between drums and discs, best thing I ever did to the car was put discs on it.
give the pads time to seat into the rotors sometimes ive seen new pads give a softer then normal pedal in some cases.
eAch set front and rear need at certain amount of residual pressure this is the reason for the vavlesi know there is one for front and on for rear i have installed disc on my fairlane and it does make a differance ,if there are no pressure vavles the shoes and disc pads have to travvel farther to make contact because there is no residual pressure in the line, hence forth soft pedal, i tryed to do it w/o the valves and was not happy with the result.with the vavles it stops on a dime its a station wagon and it is a lot harder to stop than a maverick,i dont think the drum on drum has the proper residual valve in place in the stock config one other thing at 137.00 mph its really hard to stop any car i know i did it at bonneville on drum on drum and it also didnt make the 1/4 mile shut down i took road off the course at over 50 mph and had to replace drivers seat (MASSIVE STAIN)
i can tell you that i notice a difference big time, drove it for years all drum and now years disc\drum. takes about the same effort for regular driving but stops at least a couple feet shorter. in a panic or high speed stop or in the rain, NIGHT AND DAY!!!!
Oh no not the residual pressure topic again. Needs the disc master. Case closed. Got this from a post I put on another thread. Its a good explanation. Did my conversion to disc and the drum/drum master does hang the pads. Put the drum/disc on and drag normal. The residual valve in the drum/drum master will put around 50 pounds of force on the caliper piston/pads if its working correctly at 10 psi. http://www.cometeastcarclub.org/PDFs/BrakePlumbing.pdf
BTW i got my entire setup including prop valve from the hayward PNP in the 90s. the master was the only part that ended up needing to be new and that was because i pulled it off a power asist mav
man you oughta come back down here and meet up. are you near Carson City? i have a buddy that lives in carson.
yeah i work in carson and live 20 min south. definately hoping to get a bay area meet up going on as i am out there quite often. wont be bringing the grabber for a while though because i am replacing a shock tower right now....
Good question. Does anyone know of a all disc master that fits? Next question is a manual all disc master out there? Versailles would be a power master I assume.
