Been looking for some time now for 8" posi chunk and just cant get my hands on one. What other rear ends will fit under our cars with no or minimal modifications? I find 8.8 and 9 " everywhere. Dont realy want a 9" cause of the weight and not running big hp. I have brand new springs and was fourtunate enough to get a set of good frame rails off a donor would like to do the rear drive and suspension all at once. So I call on the Mav guru's to clue me on what will work. Thanks again, Mitch

You can also buy an aftermarket unit for your 8". Surly some of the makers have one for the 8"
I remember when I bought the Richmond Lock-Rite for my 9" in my F100 they had a listing for an 8" also. I got mine through Summit.

Its seem as if the gear fairy has found us. Ran across A guy in yankton S.D. who will build me one for $550.00 Seems fair to me, Ive seen 9" on flea bay for $795 so $550.00 plus $50.00 ship dont sound bad. brand new 3;73 gears with new trac loc and bearings, set up in a freshley bead blasted housing. Does that sound reasonable to you guys?

be careful about some of those guys . my friend sells those on e-bay for 795.00
and has said the new posi unit is 325.00 and the ring set is around 125.00 and the bearings are 65.00 and has to have a case .So I don't know how he is making any profit at that price not saying it is bad just be carefull ,,,

    8" posi

I recently found an 8" posi hogshead for mine in a 74' ranchero . rear axle code was a "O" with a 3.00 gear.

thanks for the advice, I will make sure of what I'm getting before I advance any cash. I want to make sure the parts are quality parts.I've had my share of problems with this build and I dont want any more!

Be VERY VERY careful about anything you buy. A friend bought a 9" "Trac-Loc" off Ebay in the 3.70 ratio. A year later I bought it from him for my F100. Later I decided to swap the gears to a 3.25 and when I pulled it apart it was not a Trac Loc at all. I should have noticed when I bought it as it did not have the recessed ring gear bolt bosses.
I tore it apart and all it had was a piece of metal bent into a sharp U shape and 4 stiff springs pressing out on the side gears. Still not sure exactly how it worked. It DID work to some extent. I had never had a Trac-Loc before and was not real sure what to expect anyway. It would spin both in gravel and partially on pavement sometimes.
I know the Richmond Lock-Rite is not near the Detroits but when I mash the gas it locks up every time regardless. Fun as heck in the rain. lol
I was wrong on where I bought mine though, it was not Summit but Jegs
I think I paid less than $200 for it.
Very easy for the average backyard mechanic to install. I have had it in I think 3 different chunks. If you follow the directions you don't have to mess with gear set ups at all.
