when i was 15 my best friend had a maverick with a 302 fiberglass front end and i use to help him work on it all the time .his dad also owned a speed shop which he inherited when his father passed his dads partner was a ford fanatic and we became best friends.to make a long story short he left me his mav and i promised him i would redo the car.which i am doing now.
my '73 4dr was my first car, and it was passed down to me from my Grandpa when i was 15 and in high school it holds alot of value to me. it was my first car, my first V8, and a Maverick to boot. that's what really got me into them. as for the love for them, it started with my 4dr and has just naturally grown over the yrs. i dont have to worry about going to a show or cruise-in and parking by myself. they're different yet simple, have clean yet distinctive looks and have a really nice curb appeal. what can i say, i just luv 'em
I was originally looking for an old Mustang to fix up for my first car a few years ago, but I found that all the ones I could afford were too far gone for us. Then I found this board and discovered Mavericks were much more affordable, and I fell in love with them when I bought my first one.
my father got a whight and red int comet gt from a georga dealership in 71! he raced it and had fun and the car was part of his life for close to 20 years.for 12 of it, it sat under a raggity tarp with ansons on it on cinder blocks when i first saw her,she was in good shape and i was 13 i fell in love with the car. it was compleat right doun to the hood scoop. i opened the door and sat in the red bucket and i new i wanted it. i bugged my dad for a couple of years and then i went into the air force. my father sold the car for 200!!!! I WAS MAD AND DIDNT TALK TO HIM FER ABOUT A MONTH. well a year and a half later i was in n.c. looken at a super bee and i spotted a comet covered in dust under a lean too doun the road i walked doun the road and it was a copper 74. them old feelings crept up and i bought it for 500 from the lady and changed the water pump it started right up! and that was my first comet. loved them ever since the summer of 04
well I was about to be driving age and my dad had a 70or71 with a transplanted 302 3spd. (moved from colum to floor shift) , that was going to be my first car, (after not getting the 68 gto that I grew up in, he had planed to give me (long story) and well I didn't get the maverick as well, as it was sold before I was old enough to drive,so when i did start driving I got his old car,it was a 73 camaro, and I kept buying 70 to 73 camaro's till I went in the service in 87, when I got out in 91 I bought a 68 gto that I never had and went from camaros to gto's and had several of each and still have a 64 tri-power 4spd sedan (post car not hard top) gto, but being a working guy the gto/pontiac stuff just was getting to costly so I played around with mopars for a while (65&66dart gt's 64 plymouth etc, scince dad liked old mopars as well) but it just didn't do it for me like the old pontiacs, and GM's , kept seeing the mustang craze and on a whim looked into fords, prices for parts and stuff ,and got my first mustang an 04 gt, then a 87 notch back lx, traded the 04 for a 07 gt and realy started liking that the fun was back, but every one has a mustang ,I still have a 04 gt (not the first one) and then it hit me that the maverick would be a good choice as it is a lot lighter than the mustang and the same drivetrain would fit, and be even faster just because of wieght and be diferent as well, so the search was on ,last july I took vacation from work and four grand and went hunting, but didn't find one and realized that a clean one might be tough to find around here, went back to work still with a maverick on the brain, first day back at work my sisters husband calls me and says I found you a car, so I took another day off the next day to get the car I have now and have had a blast with it ever scince, still gathering parts to do to the car what I got it for, that is a 347 stroker, c-4, 9in., disc brakes, a set of welds and some flowmasters to make a car to go to the track and cruise in on nice nights with out it taking every dime and being to rare to drive and have fun in. more people relate to the maverick and that is cool ,they either had one or their aunt took them to school in one, etc. etc. and the ones that had one know what it is and realy like seeing one again, the gto was different , every one thought it was awesome but they rarely could relate to it like the maverick ,it was my uncle had a bad s$$ chevelle like that or that have the big block in it? don't know but more average people had mavericks and remember them , gto's most knew what they were but had no idea what they were about. who knows after this ones done ,Ive had so much fun with it I will be getting another one to make a bracket car out of , 9.90 S/G maverick sounds like my next one as I miss the drag racing more than having a bad street car.
Here's why I like / own my Comet GTs... 1. They're fun cars to drive! 2. There isn't a ton of them in the parking lots & at shows. 3. They're fun cars to drive! 4. They're not made of recycled beer cans like today's jelly bean cars. 5. They're fun cars to drive! 6. They're easy to work on and modify to what you want the car to look like. 7. Did I mention they're fun cars to drive? 8. Chicks dig 'em! -Scott H.
Originally, I wanted a first gen Camaro, or a Chevelle to build up. But when my wife's great grandmother passed away, she had this POS yellow Maverick with vinyl top and 302 in it, and it ended up in the family barn for a couple years. After a year or two, I asked the grandmother (great-grandmother's daughter) if she wanted to give it to someone who cared. So I got it, and started to mangle it into the form it is now in.
Jamie, Lark and Beverly Bragg are extremely active in the MCA and should be easy to reach. They are both National Directors in the MCA. They are big in the show at Pennsacola where Ray attends each year. He probably even knows them. I am sure someone can find out what happened to your family's GT. My experience with Mavericks began with the purchase in '04 of a Mustang Sprint similiar to the one I special ordered back in '72. After getting it painted, I started looking around for a Maverick Sprint to go with it. In the summer of '07, I found one on Ebay in Ga. I drove up and picked it up and began coming on this site. A couple of months later, a member here was selling a '72 Comet GT. I went back to Ga. and bought it. He had a '72 Comet parts he was saving for parts for the GT. I bought it, too. Another trip back to Ga. He also had a '71 Grabber. I bought it, too, another trip to Ga. Total of 4 trips in 4 months. Last summer, There was a Pinto Sprint available in Mich. I bought it, too, but had to sell the Grabber to a local friend to make room. So now, I have all 3 Sprints. Ken has the Grabber. Brad, the fellow with the Pinto has a Maverick. And, I spend all my extra time and money working on these old cars. I should have a sign on my chest at work that says" I work for parts". Jim
I've found email addresses for him and what not, but never got a response. I've not really pursued it too much though. I just checked the Florida DMV site (1K31F566043 VIN), and looks like the registration has been renewed again through 8/21/2010. 7,765 actual mileage is hilarious. The car had way over 300,000.
I told my dad I wanted something from the 70s. I had never heard of a maverick. I was expecting mustang, charger, gto, or something else I could never have really afforded. He should the mav to me and $270 later, I was a maverick owner. So it was an arranged marriage that eventually lead to love.
For me it was my first car bought it for $1,000.00. Well my dad bought it for me. I overhauled the engine, and repainted the car, and a few other things and it has been a really good car. Can always trust the mav. Hardly ever breaks down. That is one of the main reason's I kept it. And just like everyone else says here, you just don't see them anymore. But personally I like big block corvettes, 74 and older. 67 corvette is my dream car. They are my passion. But they have became to expensive to play with. So there goes that idea. And here is a list of my cars I have had, and the mav is still hanging around. Cars bought in order and how much I payed. 1. 73 Maverick - 302 $1000. year 1996 2. Mustang II - Can't remember the year - Engine blew up. Gone. $800. Year 1997 3. 66 Chevelle SS - 396 - Father son project, that we are still working on. $5000. Plus who knows how much to restore the dam thing. Still have it, still restoring it. Year 1997. 4. 72 Maverick - 250 - Sold to my cousin. Don't know what happened to it. $200. Year 1998 5. 74 Corvette - 454 - Raced it to hard, Replaced the engine twice. lol. One time racing a viper, and I was ahead till I threw a rod. Awsomeness. The last time cracked engine block, racing my buddies challenger. This car was fast. $4,500. Got a killer deal on it. - Sold it, and regret it. year 2000 6. 93 Grand Prix - Brother totaled it on black ice. $3000. year 2003 7. 05 Sentra - Guy ran a red light and totaled my car. $21,000 Brand new. year 2005 Out of all those cars I the mav. has lasted the longest. That is why I have a maverick! But if anyone has a 67 corvette sitting around I will trade you for my mav. lol.
