dont know about the early tank, but ive seen the 69-70 tanks in our cars. use the search feature to find out more, there may also be a tech article on it....
I think Fan2488 put one in a 70. I will eventually when I get back to the convertible project, but thats no time soon.
I'm putting in a 66 Mustang tank in now by cutting out the rotten trunk floor pan. I'm going to make braces for it by cutting and welding andle iron to the frame rails and having the tank bolt down to them. I don't have any pics but I can tell you that it really helped to have a 66 tank for mockup when it came to cutting out for this! Scott
Even though I've already converted my Comet GT over to a Mustang tank, I'm going to buy the bigger 69-70 tank and redo the floor so it will be a drop in tank like the mustang and 70 maverick is.I'm doing it for 2 reasons. First one of course is the larger capacity, and second, to raise the tank up so I can make a frame mounted trailer hitch that wont hang down. I will do a tech article when I do. It will be the same principals for the 70. One thing I discovered today is you can take a standard non vented gas cap and easily make it vented. There is a hole on the back side of the cap which is a check valve. It allows air in, to prevent a vacuum, but not out. Just take a drill bit the size of the hole and carefully drill it out, being careful not to go too deep. You will feel it punch through the check valve. I did it to 2 caps just to verify. Works great and no more carbon canister or vent lines.
I am lucky my floor and the entire car is pretty good shape , I am going to cut out the passenger side floor and just move that piece I cut out over and trim it and weld it back in to keep the lip for bolting the tank in , then sit the tank in , measure the gaps at the front and left side and weld in some thicker plates and bracing if need be to bolt it in like factory .... 1970 model 4 lug is 4x4.5 bolt pattern right ? anybody got a pic of a maverick with the american racing Ansen wheels on it , thinking about ordering a set today , Im in the process of putting this car back together for my dad who has cancer ....... Thanks for any helpful info you guys might have
I can tell how not install a Mustang tank in a Maverick. Went I got my Maverick the PO install a Mustang tank by hanging the front and rear of the tank on angle iron. The angle iron was supported with 4 long bolts in the rear and 2 long bolts at the front of the tank going through the floor pan. Nothing to keep the angle iron from swinging away from each other and dropping the tank on the ground. You can imagine the weight of a full tank of gas and crossing a uneven intersection or train track.
Mine will be supported around all 4 edges just like the factory setup , it will be put in from the top
After cutting out panel , I just placed the tank in to check the alignment of the filler tube / leaving the stock location on the left side is close enough IMO ......so I just cut out the right side to move it over
this is the cut out piece from the right side / put it in the vice to cut off the muffler hanger and the top part of trunk material needed to be removed this leaves a gap at the front on the left , and a small box to fill in on the right side which I will make a lip on the bottom side so that the tank is supported all around just as the factory one was Just gotta go to tractor supply to get some sheet metal I know the welds are crap but they are only tacked right now till I can get a welder with a lower heat range so I can keep from blowing holes thru the sheet metal
