Have you seen the size of a 5.4? Even a 2V 5.4 is wider than a 460. Shorter in length and shorter in height than a 460 (but not by much) but it's HUGE. Making it fit in the engine bay will be a major challenge. Exhaust ports point downward, similar to a cleveland. Kind of tough to get to in order to hook up the manifolds. There is no distributor, so you'll either have to fab something up or go EFI. Or go with a carb intake (which is available but expensive) and either fab up a distributor setup or buy an ignition controller of some sort. Either way you look at it, it won't be cheap or easy. The iron block 5.4's are also very heavy as opposed to a small block. Something else to consider. Transmission bellhousing is TOTALLY different than a SBF, meaning you'll either have to get a Modular bellhousing from the aftermarket which would let you use a C4, Powerglide, etc (they make them for different transmissions) or go with a Mustang T45 from a 4.6, or use the auto from the van, but again, you'll want the wiring harness, computer, everything to make the EFI work toghether with the transmission. No matter which way you choose, it will be a challenge. Would I do it? Yeah...that is...if I had the time and money. I have neither one unfortunately, which is why if I had a Maverick or Comet, I'd either leave the inline 6 in it or drop in a little small block.
The 5.4 out of the Navigators are a 4v DOHC engine. The difference between them and the Cobra blocks besides diplacement is that the Navi block is cast iron instead of aluminum. Some guys are building 5.4 4v engines using the Navi block and Cobra heads, and a aussie intake, which is basically the BOSS engine they use in the Aussie Ford cars. They are huge nasty engines, much bigger than a regular 4.6 DOHC. I saw my 4.6 DOHC engine and the 5.4 DOHC sitting side by side a WOW is all I can say! IMO the 2v 5.4 is not going to be worth the hassel. #1. It's not going to fit without a Mustang II front end swap trust me. So that alone is going to cost you a couple grand. #2 there not as much of an aftermarket for the 2v 5.4 as there is for the 2v, 3v, or 4v 4.6, so you can throw cheap right out the window. Things are getting cheaper...I should rephrase that....stuff for Modular engines has been going down in price over the past couple years as more of these engine are in use and used parts can now be had. But if your looking for something that wont break the bank then stick with the 302.
long story shot... the deal fell through but i have to say... the bank aproved her for 4000 dollars for the car LOL
Sorry, that didnt come out right i knew the 3 valve motors were available but in a truck for the 5.4. I was really trying to reiterate that a lightning wasn't a 4 valve and a cobra wasnt a 3.
plenty of 4v 5.4s and 4.6s one word..lincoln, 90% of the parts swap on 4.6 2v-4v MODULAR is the key word. the blocks have different combos of crap but u can use an aluminum cobra 4v block in to build a light gt motor, and use a iron gt 2v block w 4v heads . 5.4s are the same way.. even 3v heads swap. my buddie has a tbird and on a board he was part of, they had a how to and putting 3v 5.4 heads on a stock tbird 4.6 and some strange intake if im not mistaken.
Wow, we made it 3 pages without this picture? This is the biggest challenge in swapping a mod motor into anything. You will HAVE to get rid of the stock suspension, and for that cost, you can build yourself a sweet little 302. Not to mention the wiring for the EFI.
For the challenge only just go with a 385 based engine. Use the money you would on making the 5.4 run on stroking the 385 engine. Build it for torque and run some 3.0 gears in it. IN a light maverick that thing would be wicked. clint
4.6 4 valve in 64 comet I am currently working on a 64 comet calient and have already stripped the front end and installed a mustang 11 front end from adonor car and have a 4.6 4valve engine in it up and running I will be taking some pictures and posting them soon, Here are a few pictures of my 64 falcon that I have already completed
One of the worst things Ford ever did (in my opinion) was replace the 5.0 and 5.8 with the 4.6 and 5.4 boat anchors. But dropping the 351 cleveland was the worst idea!
I know this is an old thread, but since it has been resurrected... I have a 2001 SVT Cobra Mustang with the 4.6L 32 valve V8 and it definitely is not a boat anchor.
