Finally took the Maverick out to test in the 1/4 mile. Its been about 18 years since Ive raced at the Texas Motorplex. When I do get to race its usually at the local 1/8 mile track in Kennedale. To make it even more exciting my dad was there testing the 427 powered '61 Starliner for the first time. Dad and I got to line up against one another for our first pass. The track was not in good shape as we both spun the tires real bad. As the night went on the track got better and the car hooked up better. I made 6 passes in all. The 5th pass the car didnt launch straight so I had to abort the pass. The 6th and final pass was the best so far with a 10.64 at 124 mph. Looking forward to doing some bracket racing soon. As for dad he was never able to get the car to hook up. We need to soften up the clutch and work on the weight transfer. His best ET was a coasting 11.05 at 124 mph. Hope you enjoy the video and pics. Eric [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gks-N0ReAZY"]YouTube - 4 speed Maverick[/ame]
Thats impressive. Damn that thing launches hard. Luv my Mavs and Comets but that Starliner is incredible. Looks like a jet ready for take off. You can really see the influence of the jet age type design back then. Put a couple of people in the trunk, it'll hook better.
Very nice and consistent! Tell you dad I love his 61 Starliner. Talking with a friend of mine the other day and he is from Texas. He said his Grandfather use to farm the land where the Texas Motorplex is.
Now that is really awesome. I luv the 4-speed and the car looks really cool too. What's the engine and what clutch are you using?
Did Mark Artis pay your Dad to put those stickers on his car? Just kidding. I've raced with a lot of those guys in the NMCA. Both cars are really nice! Makes me wonder how fast I could go with a stick in my car?? Hmmm
Thanks for the compliments. The combo is a 12.5:1 347 sollid roller with AFR 205 heads, Vic Jr. intake and an 820 cfm carb. Transmission is a Jerrico 4 speed with a McCloud SoftLock clutch. Im using Caltracs with the split monoleaf springs and Rancho shocks. Launching at 6,000 rpm and shifting at 6,800. It goes thru the traps at 7,100 rpm. Ive always enjoyed racing a stick shift car. Its also pretty cool when people come up at the track asking about the trans and to see their reaction when I tell them its a stick. Eric
Great Pics! I love your Dads Starliner! When I was a kid in the '60s a guy in town had a black '61 Starliner with chromies,red lines,and a P.I.390 Tri-Power with a stick,man I like those cars!
Two sweet cars but I have to say the '61 Starliner is my favorite Ford design of all time. Just a beautiful, beautiful, design across the board. To me it represents the pinnacle of late 50's and early 60's design. None of the excess, all of the beauty. Truly art in design. That's what the rest of the world could never capture in car design. Back when cars were part artistic expression and not econo boxes. Throw in a 427 and it's just that much better. Gotta love a 4 gear too! Thanks for sharing.
