    axle length

The 8in 74 Maverick axles I have measure 29in and 25 3/16in from the backside of the axle flange to the end. They are 28 splines. Hope this helps.:)

My interchange manual says the RH is 29 39/64", LH is 25 35/64". I believe they measure them from wheel mounting surface to other end. They will only interchange with 74-77 Mavs and Comets.

    72 axle length?

Can you or someone answer the same question for a 72 Comet? I have the opportunity to buy a 9" w/ posi and 3.73, 31 spline axles, 5 on 4.5 pattern. I just want to know measurements beforehand.

    Glad to. 72 Comet, 5 lug, 28 spline: Lh=25 9/16", RH= 29 5/8".

my cruddy explanation..almsot woman like :D

look at the differential...the um..place where the driveshaft goes in aint dead center, the housing or whatever is kinda lopsided, and maybe something with the gears...but the axles are different lengths so that they the wheels are "even" and stuff when its all hooked up...its a good thing...perfectly normal...im tired, sorry for the cruddy explaination..its 3am...

The drive shaft, yoke, and the pinoin gear are all centered in the car. The ring gear is offset and centered on the ring gear carrier because that complete unit is offset the axles are long on one side and short on the other.

Just for referance the 8.8 mustang rear end have equal lenth axles this is done by putting the ring gear offset on the carrier. Making the carrier centered in the axle housing.
