I have a cursed radiator, it murders all my electric fans. It was working fine for a day after we moved the battery and solenoid to the trunk. Then on the way home I noticed it wasn't running with the engine temp. Tried adjusting the thermostatic switch, nothing. Removed the ground and replaced, nothing. It doesn't turn on when the AC kicks on either. The power cable comes from the alternator and that's working fine.
maybe check/replace the relay... it may be allowing too much voltage to it, or maybe u might want to think about adding a diode on the 12v+ wire to the fan. just my thoughts
tested the motor, the motor is dead for sure. Maybe it was just on it's last leg. I still think there is a slight chance that there is something shady going on. I've never trusted this "aluminum" radiator business, it's quite possible my radiator is a serial killer. I mean what's the chance of 2 electric fans going dead? I'm not sure of a motive, that's the only loophole here but I'm gonna investigate further . . .
the fan came off the first one, and the motor died on the second one. thats a clever radiator changing its mo for each kill it does.
you forgot about how the radiator killed the solenoid the very first time! so that's one attempted murder, followed by 2 first degree murders. I think I'm gonna drive the hummer tomorrow, don't feel safe in the maverick any more.
oh man I think you're right! awesome . . . I'm gonna go back out to the junk yard and see if I can get something that'll work since I have the receipt still. if not I'll get this one: For $120 from Rockauto
Looks like the one I have sitting in its box here for when my "used" Taurus fan motor goes on a killing spree.Got mine from Advance Auto parts...Think it cost me 65.00.That was wholesale and no tax though...Have fun Mo!!!
IMO sounds like youre getting power surges into the fan motor thats burning up the internals...didnt you say you have a more powerful alternator, and that a wire from the alt is running to the fan? I dont know if that could be the problem, but it sounds like more of an electrical issue then a radiator issue. If there was too much power going to the fan, it could have been spinning fast enough to break the shaft of the fan on the first one...and the second one probably ended up burning up before it broke anything. Im not exactly sure how electrical systems on cars work(volts vs. amps. etc...)...so I may be wwwaaayyyyy off base here
i bought the complete setup...$111... did you check and see if the low side would work? it's not likely that both sides low/high went at the same time... i know they will burn up if the low/high sides are running at the same time.. ...Frank...
So I took a power wire and bypassed the solenoid and thermostatic switch and couldn't get the motor to turn over on the high side or the low side. The only thing that should have been a hint for me is that when I first installed the motor there was a lot of fine black metal shavings that I shook out of the motor (I thought it was some sort of magical lubricating powder...guess not!) and when the motor would turn over it clicked every turn. So maybe the motor was on its last leg.
sounds like the motor bushings\bearings were bad when you installed it. i just pulled a dead fan from a server with that same dust from the bushing all over it.
that sounds right . . . so today Bryant and I went to the junk yard and got a really good one. Installed it today and it's working great.
If your battery and solenoid are in the trunk where are you connecting the alternator charge wire to the battery?
