It should have bucket seats. Look for bucket seat holes, even if it does not have bucket seats. Also, it should have a black dash with Comet on it. A hood scoop and stripes, of course were also part of the package. Only a Marti report will authenticate the option.

Look under the car and see if it has all the beam supports for the bucket seats. As mentioned someone may have changed the seats, however the floor pans have extra welded in 'C' shaped supports at all four corners where the seats bolt on under the car. They also have a large front support on the inside of the floor pan for the front two bolt holes if your able to see under the carpet.

Bench seat cars only have the supports for the outside two holes not all four like factory bucket seat cars.

    ALL comet Gt's had:
    sport mirrors
    stripes
    hood scoop
    blacked out dash
    blacked out rear tail panel
    bucket seats
    deluxe door panels
    black grille

any or all of this can be missing and still be a GT but i highly doubt it. even if u look under it and it has the supports for bucket seats, you could get buckets as an option in any 2dr. good luck :)

And as stated a Marti Report is only true way....It will say GT Group here is a pic of mine. From what you described I have serious doubts that it is.

Objection. Your honor, mine had a broken grill, that if I recall was kinda silverish gray. I don't remember for sure but I thought I threw away the bench. I'm having a hard time remembering 20 yrs ago.

I agree, that is why I believe Marti Report is only true way, cars could be ordered any way you wanted them almost.

the grille could have variations, or it could have been changed over the yrs....

but bucket seats were part of the GT package. if you threw away a bench out of your car, someone put it in there

As for the bench, I did save the car from a wrecking yard  I thought I read that the grill was only black in 72? Or was that it had the stainless strips?

72 GT will not have chrome drip rail mouldings or rocker panel mouldings. Should have a blacked out tail panel. Black grill with stainless strips and Hood scoop. I have seen GT's with bench seat and colum shifter. Been so many years ago the seat could have been changed.
