I have a 72 maverick 2dr that I plan to build a dragcar out of. I know a 351w based engine will make more power but you have to cut the shocktowers to change plugs, different headers and intake.
This is my idea so tell me if it sounds reasonable.
    Chassis
stock chassis with subframe connectors, caltracs in rear, 90/10 drag shocks. and a 10 pt cage
    engine
    347 stroker
    10.8-1 compression
    afr 185's
solid roller cam not sure on specs yet
    victor jr intake
    hooker 6901 longtube headers
    msd ignition.
built c4 tranny with 3500 stall
    9 inch rear with 4.88's
    26x8.5 slicks.
I believe this combo should run high 6's in the 1/8. Similiar cars are running from 6.60's-7.00.
I plan on starting on this when I finish trade school in august.

Sounds like it should do it. What is your class limits? What Class are you going to run? If you have to slow the car down to run a certain et class, it can be pretty inconsistent, if you're footbraking. I asked my engine builder at the time to build me a 347 that would run 12.0s since my class has 12.0 as it's fastest allowed et. He told me he couldn't make a 347 run that slow.:D He said he'd build me a 302. He did and so far the best time was 11.81. It usually runs 12.0s so it's one of the fastest cars in the class. :)P.S. I run 4:33 in the 1/4. I think the 4:88s would be a good place to start in the 1/8.

My car (347)has less gear, less head, has a hyd roller cam with a taller tires and runs 7 teens in the 1/8. Even runs 7.50 on street tires. 6.90's is no problem with that, but i would run less gear unless your only gonna race it. Otherwise, id put more in it and run a 28x9 tire either way.

It's going to be a bracket car only. Couldn't afford to drive it on the street. lol

Oh yea, mine's a pump gas motor. I have converted to e85 now but it ran on 93 for years. Still gets 10mpg.

with 26 inch tire, c4 and 4.88 gears you will be turning some RPM's at the big end. Which is no biggie for a small block. But I would invest in a main girdle and windage tray.
28 inch tires will cut a couple hundred off the RPM's or go with 4.56's.
I have had 4.86-4.56-4.11's in mine all with a 28 inch tire and c4. Of course all combo's are different, but I shifted and went through the traps at 6,400 rpm's with the 4.56 gear.

were you running a 1/4 or 1/8 mile. A main girdle and windage tray were in the plan. I want it to stay together a couple years hopefully

I've never had either. I shifted at 7200 rpm for 3 years. I rebuilt the motor and changed a few things last year. I now shift at 6800 RPM. No problems. I think both are good insurance though.:)

I think you should loosen up the converter. 3500 is not much considering the heads and the gear. It will also depend on the camshaft you choose. And I use a 4:86 as my 1/4 mile gear.

would a 4500-5000 converter work better. What camshaft and converter would you reccomend. Going by your timeslip in the database your car works great

Get a good converter! 4000-4500 minimum. Comp extreme energy cams work great.
