Curious to know what some of the members with multiple cars look for when potentially picking up any parts cars.

You all would be shocked at how solid and cancer free some of the Maverick hulks that I occasionally see in my local junkyards. 2 and 4 door cars, LDO's, even Grabbers. I kid you not.
Hard to believe, but some people, even throw away Comets with decent bodies too. I always seem to miss the GT hood scoops though.

first make sure the car is in bad enough shape that you wont regret parting it out...then check for options like, bucket seats, sport mirrors, V8, nice door panels and kick panels, Dash pad is a huge plus in a parts car too :thumbs2:

Look to make sure it actually has the parts you need! I know it sounds funny but why buy a parts car if you can't use any of it?

    Very well said.

If your buying it for parts for yourself, then make sure it has what you need first. No need in buying a car in hopes of selling other things, when you may have to sit on them forever.

A few things to look for I think would be good floor pans, quarter panels, shifters, mirrors, grilles, hoods.

    A few I've bought in the(recent) past;
'73 LDO 2dr-really rusty, but had nice bucket seats/door panels, v8 stuff, 5-lug rear, a nice hood & front bumper 7 a set of 14" slot mags. Also had a Hurst shifter and a set of Autometer gauges.
'70 2dr- traded a rusty Grabber hood for the car. Had good front/rear small bumpers and manual trans pedals.
'76 2dr- no motor, but had power disc brakes, nice grill, 5-lug rear and a solid left fender apron(with battery tray)
'75 4dr-5-lug rear, nice steering wheel and lower dash, windshield
    '71 Grabber-decent body parts(no hood),rear defrost, sport lamp switch
'74 2dr- nice Grabber hood, disc brakes, 5-lug rear, small bumpers, sport wheel.
I didn't really need all of these parts, but I've kept what I needed and most of the desireable stuff has found happy homes.:D

Rust. If its rusty, then it's a good parts car.

Yeah, look for Comet parts cars. They cost more and more intelligent people bought them in the beginning and took better care of them in addition to be better built from the factory. Fix up that throw away Maverick using some real quality parts from a Comet.

 If you can't beat 'em......

That's EXACTLY what I look for actually! :D

If I have to, I'll use inferior Maverick parts on my cars but I prefer the real thing! (y)

I buy for the parts i need that a Maverick or Comet my have. The last one i bought was a Comet and all i needed was the front and back seats. I did strip the rest of the car down to the bone to the point that my Uncle needed to bring wheels to tow it and a big piece of wood so he could attach it to the front of the car sorta like a bumper just to tow it. I use and keep everything. Some stuff i sell which i have but most stuff i keep. You never know when your going to need a part.

I will almost always sell the Maverick parts as they are not as good as Comet parts, not as classy and more prone to have rot. As in a rotten attitude, hee, hee, ho, ho, ho.:rofl2:
