Of course, I am not a Sprint expert like Dennis, but I believe the trim and paint codes are the only things that designates it as a Sprint. Kind of like the 70 Grabbers. -Corbin
Okay so while I wait for Dennis to give the definitive answer do you know what the paint code is, Corbin? Is it the same code as for Wimbledon White?
OK, so here's the story so far. I approached a gentleman last year around this time about a Mav I saw on one of my back alley tours. It had the Sprint striping on the exterior but he wasn't in a hurry to show it at the time so I didn't get the opportunity to have a closer look. Well, he phoned me this past Saturday and asked if I'd like to see it. Of course I said no. Anyway I went to see it today and it looks legit, although I wasn't able to check the ID tag on the door since the driver's side is too close to the wall next to it. It's in rough shape from having sat for several years and would be a pretty ambitious project, but doesn't appear to have any rust through in any of the key structural areas. It has a 302, front bench, column shift, 60k miles. I've made a tentative deal for it while I track down a floor jack so I can move it away from the wall. I'll keep you guys posted on how the sitch progresses in the next day or so. Believe me,I'm on the edge of my freakin' seat here myself.
Not sure about the flags Stefan. They, along with the majority of the red pinstripes, have fallen off due to being exposed to the elements. Will post more info as soon as I see it again (hopefully when I tow it to my backyard).
Sounds like a good deal, hope you get it. I'm going to start a Sprint registry so keep it in mind if you do.
Actually Rick, I don't think he does jest. Back in February when I mentioned the car to him, Stefan and I were debating over the possibility that since the car is here in Canada, it might have had a Canadian flag instead. I doubt that it would have, but it's fun to speculate. I was back over there with my dad this morning to push it out into the middle of the yard but I was running late for work and totally forgot to check the trim code. In any case at the price we agreed on it's still worth it even if it's not authentic, but I'm confident it is. If all goes well tonight we should be able to load it on the dolly and bring it to its new home. :bananaman Thanks Dennis for letting me know about the registry. I'll get back to you about it for sure.
Steve, take a look at this: http://webpages.uah.edu/~russell/backgrnd.htm If its a Canadian Sprint, that will be one rare Maverick!
Major Update OK folks, after much sitting on pins and needles, it's finally mine. It's in my backyard as we speak, it's an authentic Sprint, and I'm thrilled beyond words. The gentleman I bought it from was very concerned about knowing my intentions with the car, I'm sure I would feel the same way, he had owned it since about '74. He wanted to be sure I wasn't going to just enter it in a demo derby or something (God forbid!). He made me promise to bring it around to visit him when it's roadworthy. There had been another guy interested in it, apparently a farmer who just wanted to pull the engine to use in something else, so that deal got killed, and now it's all mine! :bananaman clap: :bananaman BTW Stefan unfortunately there's no evidence of the quarter-panel emblems left, but I'll try to see if there's any other way to verify it's Canadian heritage. And Dennis, please PM me to let me know what kind of info you need for your registry. I took a bunch of pics and will get some more (I ran out of daylight) and post them ASAP when I get them developed. Thanks to everyone for the moral support here over the last couple of days. Holy crap I need a bigger garage NOW!
