I need some advice about Lock-Right Powertrax Posi units for 8.0 Rear End. It says that they work fine for Regular Street use. Cost on these new is about 250.00, and no special set up. Has anyone purchased one of these units, and how would you rate it? Thanks, Kirk (y)

Kirk,I have a rear end shop, and have installed quite a few of them, they work fine for racing, and are OK on the street ,and are a positive locker type setup, the only thing you won't like is every time you back out of your drive,or pull away from a stop and make a hard turn, they clunk and bang and jerk until you're straight again, the newer ones they have now are alot better and less aggresive than the ones a few years ago.Jack

I put one in my sons Dodge Ram 1500 that was a one wheel wonder. He beat the crap out of that truck off roading, hunting the back county, and just general stupid stuff young guys do. After a couple years he was gonna trade in the truck and I wanted my powertrak back so I took it out before he got rid of the truck. The thing looked like brand new yet. I was expecting it to be all tore up but it was near perfect. I am totally sold on these as a cheap way to get a traction-lok like action (if you can put up with the little jerks and noises around corners).

Jack are the newer ones the PT1810 style Lock right or are you talking about the powertrax Lock-right unit? or do you think in your opinion ( you work on these) better off trying to find a Ford Unit. Hard to find used.:hmmm:

Kirk, there,s a couple different Co.s making this type "locker" they are all very similar,The factory Trac-Loc is VERY hard to find anymore and new they are around 400.00 now, once in awhile you can find one on ebay,( a lot will disagree with the next statement) ANYTHING is beter than running a spool on the street, hard on axles and gears, and dangerous on wet roads.Good Luck Jack

i loved the lockright i had in my silverado, lasted for years behind 310 foot pounds at the wheels with big wide tires.my wife had never even knew you could take the cover off a rear axle and she installed it in about an hour.i had her do it cause i cant stand the smell of gear oil.i will say if the big pin in your axle is worn, replace it. only mod i made was to "shim" the little springs that go in the locker about 1/8 inch to tighten it up.

Hmm I dont see why alot will disagree with you I dont know anyone that runs a spool on the street anymore, heck the worst I know of anymore is a friend of mine runs a detroit on the street and his tires chirp around every corner.

the thing i have found about lockers is that the bigger and heavyer the vehical the less noticeable a locker is. now the mav is not a big heavy vehical. you will notice it quite a bit. it will lock the axles toghter when you are applying power. so in turns if your giving it power the axles with be locked and a tire will usually squeal. also if you are not applying power in the begining of the turn then give it power the rear will lock and you will find that you will have to turn the wheel more to maintain the arc of the turn.

If hes truly running a Detroit and has tire chirp, Then there is somthing wrong with the locker. Detroit's don't chirp, The ole style clicks, The new style makes no racket at all.

Correct,I run a new style Detroit in my Mav and only once in awhile it will clunk backing out of my garage and turning sharply,of course I have a 4 speed and ladder bars with Heim ends, which kinda exaggerates the clunk a little, otherwise you don't know it's there. Also as Bryant said the heavier the vehicle, the less noticeable. A stick loads and unloads more than an automatic, and a "Loc-Rite" is a lot smoother in an automatic.

my detroit will chirp the tires in turns. thats what a locker does. it doesnt have any audible clicks or pops from the locker itself but a locker will cause the tires to chirp in curtian occasions.

If a DETROIT chirps the tires in a turn it is not unlocking, Two reasons, The springs have the wrong spring rate for the weight of the vehicle or there is somthing causing the side gears to bind. I have been running DETROITS (true Detroits, not the knockoffs) since the 70s And have never had them to chirp the tires. Ive had them to hang when new and pop and bang but this always goes away with mileage. On our cars now we have 1- 8 inch, 1- 9 inch, 1- 8.8 inch with Detroit's. None of these cars experience any tire chirp.

HAve a locker in mine with 4:11 and it works great. I get a little tire chirp. Only on tight turns (right turns at lights) if I get on the gas too much. It does get noisy parking and backing out of drives but thats OK. (y) I would suggest installing one vs the cost of limited slip.

if im coasting or holding speed through the turn it does unlock, but if im applying some power it will lock in or stay locked. i did notice that when i had dragradials on it didnt chirp in the turns. it just churps when i have my cheap street tires on.
