Alright so I was pulling my radiator out of my 76 Mav - 250 yesterday and I broke something.... I need to know what this part is called, where I can get a replacement and approx. cost of that replacement. Also the difficulty of this job if anyone knows. The part is actually one of the pipes that connect to the base of the radiator as shown in the picture below. The first one came off/loose no problem. Second one literally twisted and broke the male end off so its still connected to my radiator. I think it was probably brittle from some degree of rust? EDIT: This is not my radiator, just a circled image of which pipe broke off.
Yea its the transmission cooler line. If the line it self twisted and broke you are going to have to run a new line. If its the fitting on the radiator than its time to replace the radiator.
The cooler and fittings are soldered into the lower tank. A radiator shop can probably repair it while you wait.
The situation would be the first one that you stated. The line itself twisted and broke so where can I get a new line at? Also, someone else said its soldered into the lower tank? That meens its not quite a simple replace by setting the car on jack stands and swapping out the lines or is it? Is this something I can do by myself or do you guys absolutely recommend a radiator shop doing the work? Where can I get these lines?
you dont need to take the rad to a shop. the damage is in the line. just get a length of 3/8ths brake line and bend it up to replace that line. that line goes to the trans. you can also cut off the broken portion and put a new fiting on it and reflair the end with a flairing tool. then you can add a short brake line to get you back to the radiator.
So your saying I can take this line on my car: tranny:---------------|break|(add brake line here)|radiator| and this just requires a flaring tool and no welding?
That line uses an inverted (double) flare at the transmission end (the 5/16" line will come this way) and an SAE flare at the radiator end. You will need the nut off the old line (or a new one) and a flaring tool to flare the line. Use the long type nut (not the short one) or the line will break at the nut from fatigue. All factory C4s use 5/16" cooler lines - not 3/8". No welding or soldering just replace the broken line. I originally thought the fitting had broken loose from the radiator - it was the part that was circled in your picture.
oops sorry about the wrong size on the line. what would we do with out you paul. thanks for saving the day again.
Thanks for all of the helpful info from everyone and sorry about the confusion I caused...tried to explain it my best but I'm not really sure of what you call different pieces and parts yet - if thats not entirely obvious...Give me a couple years, I'll figure it out
