Ok, so I got a box from Summit Racing Today with new KYB front shocks for street use KG4517. This shock is listed for 70-77 Maverick w stock height suspension. But I go to put the shock on the car and I can't get the shock above the upper mount. So I pull it out and look vs the old shocks and the new KYB is one inch too short ! I removed the 90/10 drag shocks CEE-2630 and they are 1" longer. vehicle has stock V8 springs and stock suspension, no shelby drop. If I put these in, the first time the suspension goes full travel it will rip the shock in two. I need correct length shock for street use on a 72 Ford Maverick V8 grabber with stock ride height and stock suspension. Anybody else run into this? Thanks Sean
Double check the part number on the shock....you might have gotten the wrong ones. It's happen to me before where someone put the wrong part in the box.
Shocks So I went to NAPA and got some Monroe shocks. Surprise they are 1" too short also. So I have my 74 6 cylinder parked in the garage. I go to remove the shock and find you have to unload the suspension to remove the shock. I get out the original shock and it is also 1" shorter, same as the KYB and Monroe. Summit tech line tells me the shock functions as an end stop for full travel??? Seems they are correct but I don't want this thing to pull in two the first time the suspension goes full travel
Are you using Mustang shock mounts...Mustang mounts are about 1/4" shorter than Maverick mounts. Your mount should be 2" tall...not 1-3/4" No, the front end will come off the ground. I seen too many cars on a post lift with the tires off the ground and the shocks surivived every time. Same thing at the drag strip.
I did my shocks with the wheels on the ground.(fenders were off) No issues. The shock will stop the suspension travel no problems on a launch.
if you are really worried about botteming the shock the build a limiting strap to keep it from happening.
I had the opposite problem with KYB shocks, i think you have the wrong ones. my car was sitting two inches higher in the front due to engine comp weight loss. when i would unbolt the shock tops they would go another inch up still. BTW just cut a coil off the front springs and now im back to stock height. i had to put my whole body on those shocks to push the rod down enough to bolt back on. they still have travel left going down also......
I just had a set of KYB's put on my car and they work great. Don't worry about the shock comming apart, won't happen. As has been previously stated, the shock is the maximum travel stop for the suspention. A drag shock is designed to allow the front suspention More travel for more weight transfer. They are called a 90-10 shock because they offer only 10 percent resistance on the lift cycle and 90 percent on the down cycle to help maintain the weight transfer. A standard shock is a 50-50 rated shock for maintaining standard ride caracteristics. Put them on and enjoy.
Shocks are in So I put them in. As soon as the engine wiring and exhaust is finished I'll take her for a drive and let you all know. Thanks
