Just thought I'd let all know that I had to take out my 72s gas tank. It dripped over the winter sitting in the garage--so replacing it with a 65-68 tank and kit from CJ PonyParts; $99!
I have decided to cut the bottom of the trunk out and place it in like a Stang. Will try and post pics as I go along or at least with the finished product. Anyone done it this way?

Mavgrab302 did a swap w/ 20gal, 69 Mustang tank frm Laurel Mustang but it cost abt $170.00. He did'nt cut the tank floor. Im not sure cutting out the floor wud'nt weaken the unibody framework. I guess it might depend on how it's done. Anyway, I wud think twice abt it. Gud Luck

I have installed quite a few Mustang tanks under the trunk floor, but never through. I was thinking of changing my Comet GT to a drop in tank. I was going to do it to raise the tank to gain more clearance for a trailer hitch.

Im not sure how much strength you speak of is in the bottom of the trunk, doesn't look any different than the early Stangs.
I plan to use the frame rails and rear lip of the frame that goes across the width of the trunk. Where the spare tags down will be moved a hair but should still work. I really want to raise the tank more because I don't like the way you can still see some of it hanging below the rear valance. It should also give plenty of room for running dual exhaust when I get to that. More to come . . .

I thought of doing that way to... Let us know how it turns out... I put a 69 20gal. under the car.... I like the idea of it sitting up higher so you can't see it from the back....

This is exactly what i ended up doing with my car i put the 20 gallon tank in and it works good just had to build the floor up to the size of the tank and shorten the filler neck.

Seems like a lot of work, when you can just buy the 75-77 tank. Cutting the floor out would be pretty nasty.....

I didn't have much option when i did the swap because i have the drop in style on the 69 so the later maverick tanks wouldn't have worked well any way.
And its not to bad if you can weld decent. ;)
