I just bought a one owner 1973 302 Maverick 2Dr. with 54000 original miles. I bought the car for my son, who will be 16 in 4 months, because he wanted a car that no one else had. Now I'm wondering if I want to send an inexperienced driver out in a car like this. Can anyone help me with an approximate value? It is not a Grabber, the car needs nothing, always garage kept, everything is original. It has power steering, AC, auto. I did install a new stereo system and dual flow masters. I'm just new to Mavericks and need some input.Keith Lashley
MY first question would be, how responsible is he? how long has he been into cars? with that low mileage it might be worth keeping for yourself. or kept for him to grow into. A hard fact many don't want to face is that MOST new drivers will have an accident of some sort, even if it's a fender-bender in a parking lot. I chose cars that were cool in kids eyes but common as belly-buttons for my kids first cars so they can learn about where to park, how to wash and wax, even not going certain places in a car because of dirt roads, vandalism, etc., etc. It could be HIS car but only for special occasions until he shows he is responsible enough to take out a not so common beauty. my .02 no idea on value but it has definitely gone up in the past few years. good luck and take care of it for years to come.
Tough question. If you and/or you son aren't "into" collectible or classic cars it probably wouldn't mean anything to you to use it as a daily driver. Just keep in mind new drivers do have more scrapes, scratches and fender benders. Getting repair parts for this car will be more difficult than a late model car. Also - they are not as safe - airbags, crumple zones, etc .. Personally - as a Maverick collector/buff - there is no way I would let my son have that car ... I would keep it for myself. The opportunity to get a Maverick in the condition that you have gotten it in are few and far between ...
There's been a few lengthy instructional articles written on the subject. Try this, and scroll down to the last post: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=7710 David
Well, I started driving MY '73 Maverick when I turned 16 (that was 20 years ago) and 3 months later, I wrecked it. Fortunately, it was repaired, but I totaled the car I hit (a Mercury Bobcat). If your kid is a safe and responsible driver, then I say go for it...who knows, maybe he'll still have it after 20 years too. In any case, congrats on becoming a fellow '73 Maverick owner...
had about the same question with my son.......he did have a minor fender bender ....... front of hood with rear of school bus, minor but still there...........I wound up trading my 99 gmc xtra cab 1/2 ton to him and I took the comet.....even trade I think....Robert ps....mine had the 250, not the 302 though
