74 Comet gt 302 with c4 automatic with floor shifter.

I needed to move my Comet so I can get my Maverick out of the garage.
But, when I put it into neutral, its not moving.
The em. break is not operational being that the cables are broken and looks like it was that way for a long time.
I removed the blocks from the wheels in order for it to roll.

Ok, I started it and put it in reverse and it would move like it was under some sort of restriction, and then a squeel and a pop. So that was an indication to stop.

I think it's some sort of transmission problem, but before I just rip it apart, I thought i'd see what you guys have to say first.

    any help is appreciated.

I disconnected some lines on my brake solonoid (is that what its called?)

and I couldn't get my car to stop rolling....almost went off a mini-cliff that ends in my back yard...

I cant really help unfortunately, but give it a few more hours and someone will have some good advise :D

You sure it's not just the brakes sticking from sitting for a while? (esp. if you have front discs, the discs get rusty sitting and 'stick' for the first little bit of driving which may explain the 'restriction'). If you have front discs check for rust on the rotors...

That's what I was thinking too. I've had drums do the same.

Rise the car up and turn each wheel. If the brakes are stuck than you can't turn the tire.

Definitely sounds like sticking brakes to me too. Start it back up and shift it from forward to reverse a few times to try to rock it back and forth a bit. If it's the brakes it should break loose.

Yes sticky breaks is what it must be. I put it in nuetral agian and i had to push hard, and it squealed and moved a little bit.
    Thanks for the help.
Its good to know its not serious broken stuff.

I just had that with a my porsche 914, sat for 3 years tarped in yard. all 4 disks where stuck/ rusted. Had to move the car so warmed her up then proceeded ease the clutch out 1st rev 1st rev, nothing. At this point I started to get frustrated ans decided to launch this thing like I was at New England Dragway :)

Well let me tell you I thought I was going to blow up something, finally got both back wheels spinning then the front disks let go with a bang and viola it was on the road again :) Sure I need a brake job...

Wife was looking out the window watching and asked me later why I was beating on it like that. Told her just a maintenance issue and smiled.

    A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do...
