My car (1975 Mercury Comet) has been having some electrical problems since I bought it good condition for 1k. here they are -The front blinker doesn't work standing but it blinks when you turn on the blinker. This could be because the standing part is broken but the blinker part is working (my gramps said) -The back tail light blinker is bright standing but when you turn on the blinker or press the brakes the light fades greatly and barely visible. -Once in a great while the blinkers don't work at all and when you turn on the blinkers the alt light blinks instead of the arrows. (Pretty Creepy actually No clue why) My boss told me this could be a short in some wire underneath the dash or whatever. That's all he said so I haven't checked it out because he hasn't given me a clue to where it is. My gramps restored a 1955 Ford Crown Victoria from just a frame and engine and I really wish I learned something from him. Any help or explanation would be greatly appreciated
good morning...:Handshake i would check all ground connections first. they become loose, broken and rusted. do a search for a wiring diagram for your car. take it and ...have fun... Frank
ok thanks any tips about wiring? I'm totally new to cars and I like being well prepared before I do anything. its an old car and I wanna keep it nice
I had the same problem. Turns out it was the turn signal switch in the colum. The plastic wears out and the weight of the lever arm was pulling the switch down just far enough to engage 1/2 the metal tabs inside which cause the reaction your seeing. I bought a repair kit which was worthless. End result was I had to replace the entire switch with harness.
my comet was barely used so this probably isnt the problem. (I hope not) but I'll definitely keep that in mind thanks
:Handshake this really doesn't matter, the plastic parts become brittle over the years and crack/break . the rubber parts do also. example: tires dry rot just sitting... i would rather have a daily driver than an orginal car that has set for 20-25 years. the fact that the car was flooded and set for years...could contribute to your electrial problems... Happy Birthday...:Handshake
thanks for the happy birthday Yeah my car definitely didn't have a daily driver. I could've gotten a pontiac easy with a $1,000 but really who would pass up a Comet in fairly good condition? It runs fine but it's cold blooded so it has some trouble starting in the mornings but when it starts up it never stalls or just turns off. My gramps suggested a pull choke for it but he's gonna have to help me with that one. I read in a recent post that in a '74 Maverick the fuse box is behind the brake pedal. Mine is a '75 Comet. I've been looking for that thing too. Is this where my fuse box is hiding also?? I'll look quick but I know I wont find it even if it's obvious
im very new at this but i got most of my lights working today by finding a loose ground. made my head lights an 3/4 of my blinkers work
BTW, i have to hold my turn signal switch up for them to work. It wont click in when in the up position. Are there after market turn signal switches?
