I took a look at my P/S drop bracket as the srteering had gotten a little wierd. Both captured nuts going into the frame had torn out and the bracket was bent. the bolt through the frame was the only thing holding it all together. My question is can I weld nuts to an 1/8" piece of steel, slide the nuts up into the existiing holes and weld the steel parallel to the frame. It will lower the bracket an additional 1/8" but I can see no problem with that. There is no rust involved. The frame is solid. I'm thinking a piece about 5" long an as wide as the frame rail Has anyone ever heard of this happening? How did you repair it?
It is not unheard of for the bracket to pull off the frame rail. LOTS of stresses being applied to it. Reinforcement of the rail where the bracket is attached is a must IMHO. If you dont want to cut open the rail and reinforce it from inside and out...I would make a wrap around plate (U) channel of some sort to surround the rail and mount the bracket. I would also gusset the bracket to prevent it from flexing on its own (It will once the rail is reinforced) Good luck!!!
when I first installed the hydraulic ram drop braket, I could see it move. a week later took it to the muffler shop and had it welded to the frame on all sides. four years later no issues. repair the bolt holes and have it welded, that should take care of it...
I ripped the one out of the frame rail on my 74 Grabber, years ago, we just welded it to the frame rail, like everyone else.
thanks guys. That makes much more sense than trying to use c channel and fabbing it up with welded nuts etc.
