OK, what you need is called a Hall Effect Sensor. This sensor replaces the speedometer drive gear that is in your transmission.
There is one bolt that holds a bracket ontop of the transmission gear, you unbolt the bolt, take the bracket off, then pull the gear and what is left of the speedometer cable out. Depending on what transmission you have and the gears that are in it now you just replace it with this Hall Effect Sensor, then hook up the electrical wires from the sensor to the speedometer. Depending on what speedometer you have you will need to drive the car (with a friend driving his car alongside you to let you know how fast you are going or drive between mile posters on the highway to find out how fast/how many miles per hour you are going, then you open the speedometer up and with the instructions set "dip" switches to get close to where you need to be. It sounds complicated but it really isn't.
Here is a link to Stewart Warners website where they give the Hall Effect Sensors.................hope this helps.

GPS units make this really simple if you happen to have one and it will display your speed accurately enough. That's how I adjust the computer in my VW for the winter tires.

    this is the...speed sensor...for my...Dakota Digital...speedo.

I push a button and a counter starts counting as I drive. when it gets to 1000 I push the button and it reg. that as a mile. if I change tires/rear gear I just do it again and it is set for that tire/rear gear.
