I've been cleaning my engine area and it's prety slow going, is there any cleaning agents you guys have used that work well, i've just been using dawn dish soap and goo-gone hehe thanks
if you can get towed to a self-serv car wash, the high pressure soap works great. I was gonna use oven cleaner, but my neighbor offered to tow me to the car wash. About five bucks later, all the grime was gone from the engine bay and the steering linkage, and the underside of the tranny tunnel.
the local discount auto parts carries a cleaner called purple power or purple stuff i have used it for years to clean everything and it is not as caustic as oven cleaner. very affordable too. i even use it dilluted to clean the house and laundry. give it a try. spray on let it sit hose off the grease and grime. works really well if you can run the engine for a few minutes and let the block get warm but it cuts cold as well. good luck
Gunk engine degreaser also works well. Most auto parts houses carry it and it's only about $3 a can. Two cans would go a long way.
My dad has a pressure washer and I've used it with a non-caustic soap and have gotten wonderful results. To really cut the grease and grime, run a hose from your hot water heater to the pressure washer. Uh, just make sure that is okay with the owner's manual of the one you borrow or rent.
I use Gunk engine cleaner on the really thick stuff and let it sit a while before scrubbing off as much of the caked on grease as I can. Then I follow that up with Castrol Super Clean in a pressure washer with a brush and then a rince with soap and water and then just plain water. No matter what you use, you will still have to scrub some areas by hand with a brush to completely remove all the grease and oil.
I used the $.99 oven cleaner this past weekend on an old trans mount that had grease, undercoating and paint on it. Sprayed it down good a couple times, left it sit overnight, then brushed it with soapy water and a wire brush. Paint and everything came off right down to the bare metal. Also ate right through the vinyl gloves I was wearing.
