    Hello all,

My car, an inline 6 single exhaust, has what seems to be an original exhaust system. However, it has two mufflers, both with original looking brackets. Is that a stock configuration? I got the car with 17,000 miles and haven't done anything to it yet. I ask because I would like to remove the rear muffler.

    Thank you,
    Liam McDermott.

I think one of them may be a Cat?
It is a 76, so it should have one.

The one at the rear is a resonator.

Is there an advantage to removing the resonator?

I doubt you'll notice anything, other than the car might be a bit louder.

Excellent, that's what I was going for. Thank you for your knowledge. Also, am I correct in assuming that the stock pipe diameter is 2 inches?

If it's going to cost you money to have it removed, don't bother.
If your looking for sound, replace the muffler.

Actually, I want to install a side turndown pipe behind the rear tire, but the resonator exit is too far back. I was just thinking that a loudness gain would be welcome.

Resonator was only for sound "modifying", or so I was told. When I worked for Midas they had a resonator bypass pipe (just a straight piece of pipe) They did not sell the resonator. Took lots of them off and could never tell the difference in sound. Some people say they make a restriction. Possibly true. The muffler at the back is the the muffler. under rear seat just forward of the axle is the resonator and the catalyst under passenger seat(if equipped). I think(been a while) the original pipe was 2". I wish I had taken the old pipe catalog when I left Midas. It had pictures, diagrams and, PN#s that interchanged directly with maremont(autozone). It covered all US model cars from 1940 to 1990. I hear they just threw it away.

Very interesting. The only deviation from my stock exhaust system was when I had what I thought was the muffler in front of the rear axle replaced due to a rust out. Did I replace the resonator with another muffler?

Probably. Or another resonator. Doesn't really matter. put the exhaust exit where you want it then listen to the car. Want it quieter? plumb a different muffler in where the resonator goes. Louder? do the same or leave out the muffler entirely(if you are allowed to, of course)
