I'd love to get my Maverick in decent enough condition to drive it a long distance, impossible as it may seem. What's the longest distance you've ever driven your maverick or comet?

About 250 miles when I bought it July 09 in Central Wisconsin. We drove it home from the car corral in Iola, WS. If I had know what I know now I probably wud have put it on a trailer or flatbed. Since the brakes were in sad shape - I got away with it but realize it was poor judgement.

About 4 miles under it's own power - it sat in a backyard for a few years - I put in a battery, filed the points, put 2 gallons of gas in it from my lawn mower can, dumped a cup of it in the carb and it actually started up and ran - it blew a brake line out at the first stop sign - the muffler and most of the pipe over the rear left a few miles later and I ran over it - just as I pulled into my driveway the left front tire went flat, couldn't steer and the car went right into my front lawn

Once I have the build done, I'm hoping it drives a little better :rofl2:

Probably about 50 miles. But rebuilding it to drive it more. But I am sure I will still trailer mine at times. sometimes it's more creature comfort as opposed to whether the maverick would make it or not.

I was hoping to find some reinforcement on this thread for my argument with my wife. When its ready, I want to go 1600 miles round trip to Michigan. Think I may have to go alone. :yup:

Drove to Roundup in KY twice. Put about 1500 miles on it each time over a 5 day period.

2300miles round trip in 2007(with Coop) and again in 2008(without Coop)! From Courtenay B.C. to the Knotts show in Cali. Drove down in one trip..stayed a week to take in the sights and drove back with no problems whatsoever! Cost me just over $870 for fuel first run and about $60 less the second time(who says double pumpers are harder on fuel!) This in a '71 Mav with a mild 351W(has run 11.55@117mph)with 3:50 gears and carrying every tool I own and many spare, just in case, parts! When Coop asked if I would go in 2007 my engine, interior and brakes were all in pieces..I got it all together..including new grabber stripes in 3 weeks in the freezing cold(it is Canada) and had it running two days before we left! My car is what I would call presentable...not a show car by any means but it will fit in. I am someone who is not rich or well to do by any standard and only do everything myself because I can't afford to pay someone to do it for me..not because I am good at anything! I am truly an example of "If I can do it..anyone can do it!" These are very simple cars and I say they can get the job done! Go for a drive!

Long trips in Mavericks and Comets

My 75 Comet , and 71 Maverick Grabber made four Hot Rod Power tours which averaged about 2500 miles each . Alex Alvarado drove the Maverick and I drove the Comet. We usually take our vacation time in the first week of June and make the tour together. We began doing this in 2005 and since we have made the tours in 2005,06,07,and 08.
Had a problem in Racine Wisconsin on one of the tours in 07 when the electric fan on the Grabber lost a fuse. Started to run hot in heavy traffic and we pulled over , found an Autozone ..replaced the fuse and finished the tour without any further problems. There is sometimes a lot of "delay" in getting into the grounds or the scheduled stop on these tours. You can imagine trying to herd 1500 or more cars into one gate. Its always a mess and we make sure the cars cooling systems are in top condition before we depart as well as tires, oil changes and in general check EVERYTHING before we leave. I recommend a Power Tour for ALL who read this forum. If you've never attended one .. You owe it to yourself to do so. Even if its a partial one or two stops . :) Cometized

Back in 2007, I made two round trips to the Horton Plaza mall in San Diego in the same week... about 145 miles one way... So 580 miles for both trips.

I too have been on the Hot Rod Power Tour and met Chip and Alex on the road. I have long hauled 3 times, last year we drove 4100 miles in the Maverick and this year was 3200 miles. I fully endorse the comments by Conetized about a good cooling system as we got hot coming into Bowling Green Ky. this year, traffic was a mess and by the time I got into the venue I hit 230 degrees. I didn't cook it but sure was getting nervous watching that temp gague climb with no where to go. One oil change later we kept on trucking.
