SO, Robb here again, with all the silly questions for you car guys. I'm learning day by day i swear... Fill me in on the posi traction deal. I am aware that my car only drives with one wheel. In my humble opinion, thats cute, but a little silly. i'd rather have both tires spin out when whooping someone's ass with my full 3 gears from the stop light at an intersection. Please inform me on what needs to happen to make both tires turn in that fashion. I have an Original 1975 I-6 C4 auto Maverick... i am ready and willing to do the work myself. i'm a quick study, i just need the info.
if you want posi track you need to buy a new center chunk but they are not cheap but you can change the gear ratio also ,,750.00 plus shipping
Hate to say it, but unless your engine is highly modified or you plan on swapping to a v8, it's a lot of expense for a stock 6 cylinder.
what was said is correct. If you have a I6 there is not much sense in a positive traction rear. However if you insist on wanting it there are many many options that you can take. The Absolute Cheapest and easiest is what someone already mentioned in putting in a Minispool which cost about $30 plus your labor. Or you can but what is known as a Ford Trac-loc which is basically a limited slip center chunk that uses clutch disc and you can buy them presetup with whatever gear ratio you want. Ebay is a good place to start. This would be an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories You could go Whole hog wild and get a 9 inch rear like this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories But my personal choice if you really want to do it yourself and want to do it on a budget would be a POWER TRAX No Slip like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Powe...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Or a Power Trax Lock Right like this.. This is what I have in my car. It is not as stoudt as the No-Slip and it is noisier (you hear it ratcheting when you make low speed turns) but I like it and I have put it through a bit of abuse and it has held up nicely for at least 2 full years behind a mild 302 and 4 speed toploader. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories There are other more expensive options like a Detroit Locker or and Auburn Locker but unless you are going to build a nice V8 with some HP over 300HP then you would be throwing money at something you don't need to. So anyway there are a few choices for you to start with
Not sure if that 6 cylinder will power a mini-spool when turning,,, What all do you want to do with your car?
I've had a mini spool in my car for a year. You will have a little trouble turning and don't plan on parallel parking if you go this route. But i got mine on E-bay for $30. came with a chrome molly cross pin too. cheap way to get posi, and I'm cheap!
i have a 9 inch with a full spool but back in tha day when i had the 8inch i just welded the spider gears i drove it that way for 2 years never had a problem and it only cost a little time and the price of some gear lube
I have the Lock Rite in my 460 Powered 71 F100. Like said you can hear it ratcheting but other than that I like it fine. I don't race the truck but it sure is a positive traction set up. I have jacked up one side and actually pulled the truck off a block with only one wheel on the ground. clint
holy crap!, thanks guys, my comp was messed up for a bit so i didn't get your replies till now. thanks for all the options! you guys always give me great advise. uhm as for what i wanna do with my car? i bought the car prob a year ago, so i could start teaching myself how to work on it. i was tired of walking up to a group of my dad's/grampa's friends and all they'd talk about was their old ford cars and how they worked on em, all the while i didn't know what in the world they were talking about. so i bought myself an old ford car, with not really any plans to do anything to it but teach myself how to fix each part as they broke down... well now its all fixed up pretty decently and now i feel like going further! I was gonna go 302 v8 and convert it to manual, preferably something with more gears than 3, put wider wheels on the back, remove rust from trunk, repaint it either original blue or go black, replace gas tank/sender, put in a cd/aux player with good speakers... etc. here in Portland OR, with a low budget, alot of those things are pretty limited to me seeing as though not too many people have mavericks up here anyways. haha
I bet there are more Mavericks around you than you realize. You just might not see them unless it is a pretty day on the weekend. Sounds like you are having fun. Don't discount your dad and his old friends. There is a LOT on knowledge there if you have the patience to listen to them and get them talking about it. I bet some of them know some tricks we have not thought of. lol clint
