I found a 72 302 with 66 289 heads on it for 50 bucks. Guy says that the engine is already bored 60 over. 1.Is this gonna be a good place to start with engine build? 2.Are 66 289 heads (stock) worth putting 300 bucks into to get better performance out of(new valves and port work, 184 valves and hump removed) 3.is 60 over to much already on the block $$$$ 4.WHAT IS A GOOD CAM TO RUN SO I CAN GET POWER AND THAT CHOPPY LOPE???? 5.where can I find research info for sbf interchanges and perfomance mods on a budget... books, websites, anything? my goal is to be able to run a 1/4 mile as fast I can maybe in the 12s or 11s.
I wouldnt waste my money on the 289 heads, you can usually find a set of rebuilt GT40 Heads for 300-500. .060 Is a little bit too much for my liking.
.060 isnt to much ive built a few of em they run fine as for heads i would go with the gt40s i have a set forsale if your interested please call 254-495-8777 the are great heads i have about a grand in them will sell for $500 they have ferrea valves 2.02 intake 1.64 exhaust comp springs, retainers, and keepers they have 3/8 screw in studs with manley guideplates they come with a set of comp stamped steel rockers and a set of roller tip rockers
If it's got the 72 pistons in it, then it needs the smaller chambered 289 heads(54 cc) to get any kind of decent compression. Or buy aftermarket heads with 58 cc chambers then mill em .040 to get em down close to the 289 heads. It's cheaper to shop around for used heads that have all the bells and whistles than it is to start with another set that doesn't.
