We were at the drag strip and I saw some of those cars with wide rear tires that tuck really far up under the rear fender and I thought it was unbelievable. Anyone done that to their maverick? I don't think I would want to go quite that wide on the tires but definitely would be willing to do something similar to my car if it looks ok. I don't know what it really all involves but I guess the purpose of it is for traction?
back halfed is when they put a new back clip or suspension. They sell rail kits and such. their narrower than the stock ones and allow huge wheel tubs to be used. If you dont want to alter the subframe rails you can do a mini tub. Theres a how to in the article section.
backhalf, tubbed out, narrowed up a lot of differnt names for it, there is a lot involved in doing what your talking about from a shortned axle, wheel tubs, aluminum work inside the car, wheels are quite pricey as the tires lol, there are many differnt suspension combos to choose from and it goes on and on....me i like going fast on a little tire lol
so I'm assuming the leaf spring would have go and instead coilovers would be installed right? I realized the rear seats wouldn't fit either. that car looks really nice in that picture.
Don't know how old you are, but real popular in the 80's. Narrowed rear end, wheel tubs, big meats on the back, little skinnys on the front. Called pro-street. Me and my friends were just poor teens at that time, so we put on as wide of tires as we could stuff inside the wheelwell. Many would put on air shocks and jack them up to the sky if they couldn't. Hot rod even had an article on back halfing a maverick. I still have a photocopy of the article somewhere in my stash of old hot rod and car craft magazines from the 80's. Possible the car above may be the one? Fits the time period, which was also big on graphics like that. Owners name was tim white. Feb. 1988 hot rod feature. If memory serves me right, I swear they did a tech article with that car on the pro street look, narrowing a rearend, installing the backhalf and tubs.
I am in the process of back halving mine as we speak. I went in a little different direction though. I am not narrowing the rear end, I am using a stock width 9" with Detroit locker and using 10" wide wheels with a 6 1/2" backspace on the rear and 7" wide on the front with a 3 1/2" backspace. This will give the car a fairly stock look from the side with both front and rear tires sitting the same under the car on the outside. I am using MT S/R 28 X 12R15 tires on the back so it will have some tire under it. The suspension on the back will be Ladder bars with coil over shocks and a Watts link to keep it centered under the car. Should work well, even though it may be a little rough to drive on the street. But that's OK with me. I will post some pics when I get it all set up.
Make sure you use a top quality heim end on the front of the ladder bars - a lot of stress up there. I'm using a Watts linkage setup on mine also - are you buying a setup or fabricating one?
Using Comp Eng Ladder bars so all is good there, I am using a universal Watts link kit from Fays2. Should work very nicely. I will not use the axel collars though, I will bring the mounts for the bars off the rear of the ladder bar mounts. One on the top and one on the bottom off the back of the mounts.
I can't wait to see your car when it's done! The setup that you desribed on your car, what kind of money am I looking at if I go this route? Thanks.
i mini tubbed mine using the article in the tech section.my 15x10 with 7" backspace tuck in the fenderwells with plenty for a 15x12 with 9" backspace.rear seat wont fit but i was going to delete that anyway. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=58897&page=3
