I make about 800 a week. A little more if I work extra. Is this enough money to realistically upgrade my mav in a respectable amount of time? How much money do you put into your mav?

Depends on what upgrades you want to make.

How much time are you talking about? In years. It all depends on what you what to do and how bad is the car.

I own my 75 mav for 4 years and still working on it. A little at a time and how much money I have. I haven't figure out how much money I spent on it :) I don't think I what to know LOL. But after its all said and done I wouldn't be surperised that I spent $8000.00 and that may be low. My car is all stock and I what to keep it that way now if you go custom add alot more money.

I have know people who own classic cars and end up droping $16-$20000.00 into it. Does that give you an idea on the amount of money to spent?

When we restored my 77' Maverick, we decided to keep the car almost completely stock as well. We replaced or refinished everything. That included all the body work and painting,( inside and out) getting the interior redone,( seats, carpet and headliner) and all the mechanical work ( engine rebuild, new front end parts, brakes, ect.). We did add a dual exhaust to the car. All the chrome was polished and the bumpers and the ' boomerrangs' were rechromed. When we sat down and actually figured out how much we had invested in the car, we came up with close to $10,000 in parts and labor. That was over the coarse of two years with as much of the work as possible being done ourselves. When you really get involved in these cars, the money spent piles up quick. The best way I can think of to give yourself an idea of what you may end up spending on the car, is to make up a list of everything you can think of that you want to do to the car. Then take that list and get an estimate price of what each item will cost and add the whole thing up. From there you can determine how much you can afford to do to the car. If you just take care of one or two things at a time, it should not empty your wallet quite so fast. It's much more affordable to spread the cost out than to tackle it all at one time.

Hey thanks I feel a little better now Donnie. :) In my case I don't have a running total at this point but I pretty well put whatever I have left after everyday expenses are taken care of (mortgage/bills/groceries etc.) which isn't much but I'm getting things done bit by bit. My credit card's taken a hit lately since I got a second Mav but I'm planning to pay it down over the winter when I can't do anything outside anyway. Just don't tackle too much at once and leave yourself some time and cash to do some fun stuff (like going to car shows :D ) so you don't lose your mind (too late for me). Good luck!

Well if you love your Mav the way I do mine it might take awhile, Its very easy to get in over your head. I didn't expect to spend as much as I have on mine so far. I think I've spent enough for one year.

    Body work + Paint $2000.00
    Tires and wheels $1500.00
    Transmission rebuild $1400.00

    Carb ------------- $460.00
    Brake work-------- $400.00
    4H halogen headlights $200
    Intake ----------- $175.00

+ other small odds and ends

I have about $6,000 in mine, plus the little things that add up and never get tallied. But...I love the car, and couldn't buy a car that good for anywhere close.

Just an offhand amount (without consulting receipts)

    '76 Maverick: $550
    Coast High Performance 302 (B&BP): $3200
    Carbs (two 80457S Holleys @ 415 each) $830
    Intake Manifold: $136
    Heddman Hedders: $245
    Exhaust system (stainless, dual): $675
    BDS 6-71 Blower with 302 kit: $2,780
    Gear Vendors Over/Underdrive: $2,454

I'm too tired to figure the total, and have left many things out, but since you asked, thats the figures on my '76 Maverick. It is painted, but hasn't been treated to a full-body powder coating, nor the licensing rights to use the "horse head" from Steve Winwood's album cover (another $2,100) to be airbrushed on the front fenders (add another $650 for the local artist).

Its a money pit to be sure, but the fact that I'm keeping one other Maverick out of the trash heap is a good thing, not to mention that it will probably be in Hot Rod mag when its done. Regardless, its a labor of love, whatever it costs.

I have $3600 in my engine alone. another $600 in tranny. and still not getting much farther than that at the moment, have bought many additional items for my car such as headers, tri-y collectors, etc., etc. but as many have attested this is a labor of love. I have many projects in the fire but I consider my Maverick my "cost no object car" since it's the one I have longed for the most and longest. now that I have it it doesn't matter what it costs me since I'll hopefully have it 'til the end, this one's not for sale!
