Aftermarket Steering Column

Has anyone installed an aftermarket Steering Column in their Maverick or Comet? Does anyone make one just for our cars?

Supposedly, Ididit has the measurements to make them. I have a gift certificate to buy one, but I just have not had the time to sit down and call them. It's something I'm considering for my 73 project car, since it looks like the 302 is getting ditched for something else....

 

Something bigger, perhaps?

I contacted them by e-mail and they said they coul dmake a custom column from the measurements but said the wiring would be GM. Would love to have a column from them.

 

I am getting ready to order one of their columns for my Mav. Their stuff is great. Definitley worth the money.

 

Compared to some of the other stuff out there, they are the best from what I've seen. The only issue I have, is they use a GM key, as far as I can tell...

 

How will you hook up the wiring isn't it GM? Did you have to provide custom measurements? Would sure love to know them.

 

I am not going to run a ignition on the column so there is no problem for me there.

Yes they come prewired for GM. Like me, most hot rod guys rewire their cars completely. Most, if not all, aftermarket wire harnesses are pretty much GM type harnesses. I already have an EZ Wire harness for my Maverick so it will not be a problem. I talked with them at length when I was at the Syracuse Nationals a few months back. They said they will make a factory replacement for the Mav. The problem there is they charge quite a bit more for it. Even they suggested just getting a universal column at whatever length I need and use that. I measured mine and if I remember correctly the 33" was right on. I will remeasure before I order though.

 

Does the column have tilt wheel feature?

That's the whole reason to do the swap.

 

hope we're not hijacking this thread but I'm wondering, how convenient is it to have a tilt option? is it worth the extra money?

 

Without question it is worth the money. I plan to drive my car as much as possible. To be able to have the wheel in a good position for long drives is priceless.
