Hey guys I have a Maverick with a 351W in it and it doesnt idle very well, somtimes when I stop at a light it will start to feel like it is miss firing and then will die (doesn't misfire while driving). I'm 19 so not so great with the carb thing I think it might be my air fuel but would that mean it is lean or rich? I screwed the jet screws in like 4 full turns and my engine never seemed to change how it was running so I stopped... Ideas? thanks -Brian

Oh yea I've checked vacuum leaks too and the carb was recently rebuilt like a month or two ago

What kind of carb is it? Was it running fine before..and gradually got worse?

its just a stock motorcraft 2 barrel and yea it was running fine and now it sucks. My timing was backed off a little if that matters. I apologize I meant the fuel adjustment screws whatever those are called (again not too good with the carb stuff)

Check the power valve! If it goes bad it will pull fuel through it flooding the engine. It is a common Ford problem. Easy fix too!:)

This problem seems to be intermittent It ran like crap last night then ran fine this morning then crap when I was working on it (which was nice). I backed my fuel mixture screws out a little and did an instant carb clean to try and get any debris out of my idle circuit. Seems to be running fine now probably wont be later. I'll get back to you guys.

My advice would be to get a shop manual that covers your car and carb. That will tell you what your base carb adjustments/settings should be and from there you can tune and adjust for better response and running. You need to have a starting point to help with the diagnosis. Good luck

i agree with simple man might be your power valve. when i first got my maverick it had a holley 4v on it and had a crappy idle and would just randomly die but at the same time would run fine when i first started it and got worse as the day went on.
