    Hello all,

My mav is currently awaiting a carb rebuild of the stock 1 barrel for the 250 engine. Ever since I bought the car, at mile 23,000 or so, I haven't taken it very far over 60, due to a very uncomfortable vibration at high speed. The engine sounds strained when this vibration is occurring. Under its first owner's care, the car sat for extended periods, causing the seals in the carb to become less than optimal. My question is this: when the carb is rebuilt, will the engine run smoother, at a lower rpm, at 65+ speeds?

    Sorry if that sounded silly,
    Liam.

The carburator has nothing to do with vibration. It does have something to do with stumbling which will make the car shake.

odds are the vibration is from the drive shaft. there are three things that can be causing it.
1 bad u joints. pull the drive shaft out and rotate each u joint. they should turn smoothly and easly.
2 bad operating angles on the u joints. this is usally caused by the motor mounts or transmission mount colapsing causing the angle the u joints operate under to co change. they have to stay if phase with each other to operate smoothly. care fully inspect the mounts for cracking or oil soaking.
3 wrong size u joint caps in the diff yoke. check to make sure that the u joint cap fits snugly in the yoke.

if you put the motor into nutrual when the vibration is happeing and it goes away then its probly engine related. if it doesnt go away its probly one of the above problems.

I had a bad vibration at highway speeds and it turned out to be a bad transmission mount. Good luck. (y)

Thank you very much for the advice. It may be a sputter that is causing shaking and I'm just confusing the two. I will check over the other potential problem points just to be sure.

    Thanks again,
    Liam.

Have you been underneath the car and taken a good look around? If the car has sat for long periods of time maybe it is something as simple as a big Dirt Dobbers nest on the drive shaft or behind one of the wheels on the brake drum. If the same tires are on the car and they are old they may have flat spots on them from sitting.
I remember when I was in the Air Force we had an old International Power-Line truck. It didn't get driven unless we had to set some new power line poles. Most of the base was underground stuff so it didn't get used much. When it would get driven it would beat you half to death with all the flat spots on the tires.. lol

The tires are fairly new radials, never having sat too long. I notice it drives really smooth until I get to around 65, when the engine is working too hard.
