Post some tricks and tips here! Please! lol. Also links to good sites or books, i wanna learn the basics of porting. I have a set of 65 289 heads/performer 289 intake that im going to use to practice on. Thanks!
Take alot of pics and keep us posted on all the progress. I've been looking into that all weekend. And I am very curious about the valve stem area and what would happen if it is made flat and smooth on iron heads. Good luck on fordmuscle.com. I found it to be very informative.
I ended up selling those heads and that intake. Now I have a set of GT40s and a stealth intake, I havent gotten around to porting them though.
See this? Don't do this to the guide boss. Chipping and flaking of the guide boss when it is this thin is bad for your engine when it is running.
You want to leave enough support for the lower valve stem. Shaping it is ok but only if you are sure of the direction of flow. 90% of your power gain comes from removing the casting lines and flashing in the bowl and on the high side of the port. Making the port larger doesn't make more power - shaping it does, but only if you know the way the air flows.
This weekend when I was checking out different sites I saw that and wondered about it. I also saw one where the boss was completely removed and made smooth to the port. What are the effects of that.
You can remove the boss completely IF you are replacing the iron guides with full length bronze guides and you taper the lower section of the guide where it sticks out into the port itself. However, this is NOT something to be done by a rookie. What most beginners are going to want to do is work on smoothing the ports and blending. Proper bowl sizing is not something easy to do by a beginner. Same with blending the bowls into the valve seat. Very delicate work and can be easily screwed up.
