I just put a new brake light switch on my Comet. Not much fun. Is there a stop somewhere under the dash that keeps the brake pedal from coming up too high?It is still the same height as before I put in the new switch but the if you pull up on the pedal it will travel quite far. Is the push rod for the master cylinder held into the MC by a clip or something and I might have dislodged it while fiddling with the brake light switch?

Yup .. there is a clip that locks the push rod in the Master Cylinder .. but only on Manual Brake master cylinders ... If you have a Power Brake master cylinder installed without the Power Booster the rod will not lock. There is no way to dislodge it ... once the rod is locked in it is nearly impossible to get out ...

It has manual brakes. I must have pulled the rod out of the MC and dislodged the clip because it won't seat back in and stay there no matter how hard I apply the brakes.

If you pulled the pushrod out of the MC then there was some other problem. I have my MC on my bench and in a vice and can't pull out the pushrod. that clip is hardend steel that holds the pushrod in the Master. If the pushrod was to fall out of the mC then you would have no brakes. built in safety by manufacters.:)

I guess on my car all that's holding the pushrod in is the rubber boot. Doesn't seem too safe to me.I'm going to put discs on it and change the MC to a Granada manual disc/drum unit.I think the new MC comes with the rod, right?I put Granada discs on my Falcon along with a Granada MC. I think I had to remove the rod to fit the MC to the Falcon but don't remember.

I made a stop for mine once upon a time. Just used a hose clamp to fasten a metal "L" bracket to the steering column. It's up under the dash so it can't be seen.
