I just got a hold of some Mav high-back buckets
    for my 73 Grabber.

I'm about 6 feet tall and find that the buckets are
just too tall for a comfy position. My head is slammed
right into the headliner. I want to drop down the
    height on them.

I figured I miight have to take a section out of the
mounting plates and then weld them back together.

Has anyone done this mod before? Any suggestions
    or better approaches?

Hmmm.... I'm not sure about that. Take the seats out and send them to me and I'll see how I fit in them. I'm 5' 6" tall and about 5' wide. I'll be able to test for a complete, uniform fit.:D

Try shimming up the front of the seat to lay it back a bit.

Well, if I did that the steering wheel would squish
into my legs. They are touching as it is. The seats
    are too high overall.

    Thanks for your recommendation.

A 13" Grant Steering wheel will help with that :D
    hehehe
Seriously, how set on using these seats are you?
The Eclipse seats I put in mine leave room in every direction. I'm a skinny guy, but I'm 5'11" and still have plenty of headroom even with my helmet on.

LOL Maybe I could just go with a pair of Vise Grips
    clamped on the column?

I have weird proportions where the majority of my
height is in my upper body. If my legs were in
    proportion I would probably be about 6' 4". :)

So this is what is giving me this problem in the first
place. I don't think a different type of seat is going
to solve the problem for me. I need to get my butt
as close to the floor as is reasonably possible.

Well if you have decent fabrication skills and equipment, you could either remove the rails from your seat and mount it rigidly in just the right position for you (no one else can drive your car) or adapt the slider brackets Summit sells for their plastic racing seats.
If you come by the races at Pacific this coming Wednesday I'd love to take a quick look at it and see if anything comes to mind.
Spectator fee is $10.00, $35.00 to race (includes yearly competition number.)

No problem I'm sure you'll figure it out. take notes and pictures on what you come up with and post it here for other tall Maverick people.

Geez, I'm 6'6" and I don't hit the headliner ('cept back in the '70's when I had my big Afro). :D

My house burned in Sept. 1997. One of the blessings of that fire was the total loss of my high school pictures with hair down to and below my shoulders. No pictorial evidence of my being a teen and young adult of the 70's. Though I wouldn't recommend it, a house fire is a great way to rid of clutter.(y)
