I have one of those made in china ds2 modules and would like swap it out for somthing more reliable. i have seen guys use hei modules but not sure ho w to hook one up to my ds2 distributor
Just get a duraspark 2 module. Napa carrier the US made ones. If you really want to do trick stuff with it check out the how to article on the different modules.
Just get a stock points type dist. Then install a Pertronix unit. It's a simple upgrade and you won't be sorry. If you still want an electronic ign then get the Pertronix III. Is a complete ign all in one small package and fits entirely inside the dist cap. Has multi-strike capability and adjustable rev limiter built in. It's the KISS principal at work. RS
I want to do this for my '88 302 HO but don't know how to get there without swapping distributor gears (which didn't work out for me). Called Pertronix and asked if they made a module that would go in an '85 Mustang distributor but no dice. They said their whole distributor works fine with the HO steel cam even though the catalog says it won't. Would like to get the setup for less than a new Pertronix distributor. Can anyone tell me what off-the-shelf parts will get me to a 5.0 distributor with a steel gear and Petronix module?
there will be no pertronix that will work with a factory steel gear distributor. pertonix is a product that is intended to replace points type distributors. all factory ford distrubtors that had the steel gear are eletronic distributors already. there was only one year that they had a carbed roller cam motor. 85 mustang gt 5.0 manual transmission. thats it. you can do this for cheap. you can that distributor for around $30-$40 at most parts stores. then get a gm hei moduel. $10-$20. then follow these directions http://www.carbdford.com/tech/HEI/hei.htm that will give you a good eletronic ignition.
It's really simple. First you need an earlier 'points type' dist. Then you replace the cast gear with a steel gear if you have a roller cam. Then any of the Pertronix I or II or III will fit. 2 wires on the module connect to the + and - terms on the coil and you are done. What's so hard about that? I can find points type dist's all day long. Same goes for drive gears. They are plentiful. Why make a simple job complicated? RS
That sounds perfect!! Thanks. I tried unsuccessfully to change the gear on my '72 302 distributor so I could use it with the 5.0. Couldn't get the holes for the roll pin to line up. Then I found instructions that said to put the gear on at 90 degrees to the hole in the shaft, press it to the correct position (easier said than done), and drill a new hole in the shaft. That's when I started looking for an alternative without spending $200-$300. I really like the idea of using readily available parts in case something fails on a trip. And, I like inexpensive!! Hope my question was close enough to fit in this thread.
I don't agree that there is no steel gear that will fit the pertronix dist. If not a good machine shop can fix that. As far as getting the holes for the gear to line up, it's only coincidence if they do line up. You have to drill new holes since each one is custom installed. Either drill a new hole in the gear using the hole in the shaft as a guide or the other way around. RS
<br /> think im gonna try this method instead of petronix i have seen alot of jeep guys do this wth good results. beats buying another whole dist just for the petronix set up
