You talking about the small Alum tag, attached by a screw to the top of the carb?

The carburetor ID tag is a small piece of sheet aluminum stamped with the carburetor ID code and the carburetor’s build date. The carburetor ID tag is usually attached to the carburetor by the front left screw on the carburetor top.

Carburetor ID codes are Ford part numbers, without the main part identification number (9510). Carburetor ID codes have a four-character prefix that identifies the application (for example, D8TE — 1978 truck) and a two- or three-character suffix that identifies the calibration (for example, BAA).

    D2 means it was a 1972

    OF means it was a mav/comet 302,

These tags are important to get parts, and for originality. Don't let your rebuilder throw it away. The Mustang boys kill for them.

ok heres what i have figured out so far. the small alum plate attaced to the carb is very confusing. i dont think its right. the carb looks just like the pic of the carter rbs carb but the plate says no. my question to you all is this. any other way of identifying it? maybe stampings somewhere i havent looked?
