i dont know for sure about ne of this.... i just put my 302 in my car and im wanting to max out my 120mph speedo. but my I6 would wind out at 107... will this change with more power i would think its a gearing problem. my rear end is marked 330 which i think means 3.30:1.. thats not a bad all around gear. so i was thinking mayby a differnt tranny would help me out. ive got a stock c4. i was thinking of going to a manual valve body for the fun of it, but i know that wouldnt help top speed. can any one give me some advice?
If your I6 would top out at 107 at say 4500RPM then the 302 would at 4500RPM (assuming final trans. is 1to 1) be running 107. To go faster you have to have more RPM than the 6 was turning or different gearing.
A full manual valve body isn't fun, it's a pain in the ass. Get something you can still put in drive.
"A full manual valve body isn't fun, it's a pain in the ass. Get something you can still put in drive." You mean you don`t know what its like to be a teen any more? Come on you know that 15 - 19 year olds love to manualy shift I don`t know if its because we are still to yung to know that it don`t do no good in a street car or if we are too yung to care, all I know is it sure is fun to do it manualy . I might grow out of it when I`m 20 .
What does being a teen have anything to do with wanting a manual? I'm 51 and will put nothing but manuals in my cars. If you aint banging gears, It aint as much fun. JMO Where did you get 3:30 gears? if the rear is stock, its either 2:79 or 3:00
Yep, they didn't come with 3.30s. Personally, I can't stand manual transmissions, but to each his/her own. Your engine ran out of power. Those I-6s are low-RPM engines. I maxed my stock 302 out at 120 with 3:55 gears at about 5300 RPM (25-1/2 inch tires) and it had a single exhaust at the time! Only modification was a 600cfm Holley 4-barrel carb. This was also at 6000 ft. above sea-level where the air is thin. If you want ecconomy, or just want to keep the car original, stick with the six...If you want performance and speed, get yourself a V-8...
hey guys thanks for the info. i didnt put the rear end in myself it was marked 330 when i got the car. but i do think it is stock so mayby it is 2.79 or 3.0. and as for a v8 that is what i droped in last sunday. ive got an 83 mustang intake, 600 cfm holley, ported cast iron heads with big valves (1.96, 1.60), headers, flat top pisons, velocity stack, functional 5 inch pro stock hood scoop, cam is a PAW hydraulic 270 intake and 280 exhaust duration, .448 intake and .472 exhast lift, 112 deg lobe cen. the cam i want is a crower. its labled "pro street solid lifter cam" 112 deg lobe cen., 282 intake and 288 exhaust duration, .478 intake and, .488 exh lift. accorrding to dyno 2000 it should make like 415 hp at 6500. but then you have the water pump and other accesory bs that take hp. so in the end i should make mayby 375hp. oh and the last thing, my I6 just about whined it was turning so many rpms at 107mph. it was 6500 to 7000+(didnt have a tach yet to know). but never the less i flatend some lifters and thats why i want a solid cam. so after letting you guys know all that can i expect to go 120+?
you probably wont get to 120 as ambulances usually don't go that much over the speed limit on the way to the hospital.
nick, don't get me wrong. i love the speed. i'm now at 12.14 and 114 mph in the 1/4. but that's where it belongs, at the track. i've got the news on, here in phoenix and they just showed a street racing accident that happened last night. not a nice sight. we need to keep all the mav/comet owners we can.
i havnt raced my car in about six months... i just like driving fast. if it wasnt a maverick it would be somthing else, sorry to say. i mean i get you point and your right, but ive restrained myself before and i just felt kind of depressed. as for the drag strip now that i have a car worthy of going, it will happen soon. but the problem with the drag strip is that you have to pay. there are lots of open roads that are less used than others. and whats better is that they are free to use. at least untill you get a ticket. one more way i look at it is when i go fast its a adrenaline rush. its a natural high. somtimes i think of some friends who smoke pot and do other drugs, and i think man there are so many other things that can give you a natural high.
Nick; ten bucks or so is nothing compared to tickets, tow charges, bail, and the worse, hospital, doctor and other bad stuff. Keep it on the track, and you will get a lot more satisfaction out of beating someone fair and square, get a ticket and maybe a few bucks in the end. Lots better than jail, or worse. Just my $.02.
ya that is once again another good point. but beating someone in bracket racing is boring. i refuse to say that bracket racing is cool. i mean i could be a top fuel dragster with my straight six, or better - my go kart. thats no fun. knowing that you have the fastest street car in town is gratifing. beating the fastest import in school by a 1/8 mile is way cool. i like heads up drag racing. i mean being the first one to the big end is the way to win. mayby they do that at you guys's drag strips. but the strip near me(Eddyville Raceway) bracket races.
